Show Art Council & Guitar Society given grants The Utah Arts Council Board of Directors has awarded two grants totaling $7,420 to two Davis County Coun-ty arts organizations to support their activities. In all, the Utah Arts Council Board of Directors on April 28 awarded $880,800 in grants to 124 nonprofit groups statewide to support sup-port specific arts projects as well as provide general support to larger , organizations. - The Council voted April 28 to allocate $6,500 to the BountifulDavis Boun-tifulDavis Art Center and $920 to the Utah Classical Guitar Society, also based in Bountiful. The art Center grant will support eight visual vis-ual arts shows, the center's traveling travel-ing exhibits and mini-exhibits for two-and-threfrKtoensional artists' work. ' ' . . The Utah Qassical Guitar Socie- munity Arts Development Grants, nonprofit organizations must then "move" into what arc called "discipline" categories and compete com-pete with other organizations within those specific artistic disciplines if they want to continue to receive state arts funding. "In recent years, there has been a major influx of Community Development De-velopment grantees moving into the discipline categories," Nixon said. 'The net result is that virtually the same number of dollars are being divided among more and more organizations." In fact, 16 new applicants were awarded $18,705 in grants in this latest grant cycle, and 11 organizations organiza-tions transferred from Community Arts Development -Grants to the discipline, categories, representing another $10,950 in grants. ty grant will support four classical guitar concerts statewide by Michael Chapdelin of Albuquerque, New Mexico, in April 1990. The $938,800 is a 1.7 percent increase in-crease over the $923,000 allocated for grants in the previous fiscal year, The additional grant monies were made available by the 1989 Utah Legislature. Even with the additional funding, the Council's Board of Directors faced, difficult decisions in allocating the grant awards as new organizations compete for existing : funds. .-.
