His father, Doug, wants his son remembered "as a good little boy who could obey rules." Mr. Beckstead expressed concern that due to the early news . reports about the ' accident, - the community may have felt Ryan was atfaulL , An eye-witness to the tragedy, Travis Merrill, said his son was also riding "Puff, the Little Fire Dragon" at the time of the accident. "I was standing at the gate watching wat-ching it go around. It seemed like a short ride when it stopped the first time and the little boy in the back started to climb out At that point, the ride started again and he fell on the tracks. Everyone started yelling, 'stop the ride, stop the ride,' but the young operator couldn't hear them, and it came around the track and hit the little boy. As soon as the ride came in I grabbed my child. I didn't stop to loosen the seat belt I just reached in and picked him up so I could get him away from the area." The flag at Ryan's school flew at half-mast throughout the week in his memory. His kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Kathryn Martin, said the children are trying hard to deal with the loss of their classmate. "Each of them bought a carnation for the funeral and we've talked about Ryan and how we missed him." She said the school psychologist has been available to help any of the children who are having a hard time. "He was really close to some... of the sixth grade boys and they have had a difficult time. They had sort of adopted Ryan," she said. Mrs. Martin said she is sure that Ryan will never be. forgotten. He was well liked bf all of the students. Many of the children have brought donations to the school and that money will be used to purchase books for the library which will be marked, "In memory of Ryan." |
