Show Literary Winners Announced The winners of the Residence Halls Association poetry, essays, and short story contest have been announced by the Department of English. Marybeth Meffert took top honors in both the poetry and short story divisions. Steve Pay-ton's Pay-ton's "The Effect of Racial Discrimination Dis-crimination on America's World Image" received top honors in the essay category. Thirty-four poems, eight short stories, and five essay;, were submitted by RHA students for the contest. Lisbeth Ruiz and James Mc-Pheeters Mc-Pheeters achieved honorable mention men-tion status for their efforts in poetry. Robin G. Henderson's short story "The Trip" also received honorable hon-orable mention. Payton's essay was concerned with the effects of America's racial unrest abroad. Payton pointed out in his discussion, South Africa suffers suf-fers from the adversity of racial prejudice more than any other country in the world, including the United States. But South Africa is not looked to as a world leader; the United States is. |
