Untold genius is exerted annually an-nually to commit as well as to prevent crime. The battle is to assure that genius on the preventive pre-ventive side wins. District manager for Mountain Moun-tain States Telephone Co., said a new lock invented by Dr. Ot-mar Ot-mar Stuetzer, a scientist of the Bell System's Sandia Corporation, Corpora-tion, may be the genius to thwart efforts of burglars. Called "piezoelectric lock" the device consists of a cylinder cylin-der and ceramic rings on a metal rod. The ringed rod is inserted in-serted in the cylinder and the rings expand in response to electrical impulses. Once the rings are expanded, the lock is secure until the exact ex-act combination of electrical signals contracts the rings and brings release. Wrong signals only serve to tighten the lock. The new lock is not only better than mechanical locks, it is superior to electronic memory locks because of less |
