Show Utah Power and Light to reduce heating costs to electric users read January 1, 1969 and thereafter. "Beginning in 1969, customers custom-ers with total electric homes served by Utah Power & Light Co., will enjoy a reduction in electric heating costs of over 20," the Utah Public Service Commission and the company announced jointly today. Donald Hacking, chairman of the commission said that approval ap-proval had been given to reduce re-duce the bottom steps in the company's two total electric rates schedules. The bottom step of the total electric rate for homes is reduced from 1.4 cents per kwh to 1.1 cent per kwh, a reduction of exactly 21.4. The bottom step of the total electric rate for commercial commer-cial establishments goes down from 1.3 .cents per kwh to 1.1 cent per kwh, a reduction of 15.4. E. M. Naughton, president of UP&LCo., said that there is an important operating reason for requesting the change. Asked to explain the reason, he said, "Until recently, the combined maximum load of all of our customers occurred in the winter. win-ter. Now, with the addition of more and more air conditioning and irrigation pumping, our maximum load occurs in the summer, as is the case with most electric companies." Mr. Naugh ton emphasized, "we must change with this changing pattern because all customers benefit when we make maximum maxi-mum use of company facilities throughout the entire year." He pointed out that "efficiency is our biggest and best weapon in our fight against inflation and to hold down costs for all of our customers."
