Show Conference in Ko!ob Stake draws large crowds to hear LDS leaders I Conference goers Sunday, in Kolob Stake, were given words of encouragement and counsel ! on many different subjects at ! the two general sessions. Special Spec-ial guest speakers from the general Sunday School Board and the Prieshood Home Tea- I ching Committee were Mrs. ! Minnie E. Anderson and Elmer Christensen, respectively, who discussed various methods of ! teaching the gospel more ef fectively through the Sunday School and the Family Home Evening Program. Mr. Chris- tensen pointed out that the deterioration of the home and the family unit by social and I ! outside pressures must stop, I ! and the home must be j ; ; strengthened and given a more ! j important place in society. He complimented the stake leaders for their originality and enthusiasm en-thusiasm for the home teaching teach-ing program, and appealed tc home teachers to do more anc better home teaching. Reed Bennett, high council advisor to the home teaching program in the stake, urged home teachers to be diligent in their callings and sincere in their desires to be of service to the families to whom they are assigned. Speaking on the importance of family home evenings were Mrs. Alma Whiting, Vickie Miner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Miner; Richard Bird, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Bird, and Bishop Morgan Mor-gan Thomas. Concluding remarks in the morning session were made by Stake President Ernest A. Strong, Jr., who pointed out that many parents are too busy to spend the proper amount of time with their children. chil-dren. "Family exaltation can only be attained through living liv-ing clean and moral lives," he said, and he pointed out many of the qualifications to be met in reaching for the highest goals. He also emphasized the importance of faith and work in one's life, and reminded all of the power of prayer in attaining at-taining an atmosphere of love in the home. President Ruel E. Crandall opened the afternoon session of the conference with remarks about the Church Welfare Pro- gram. "It is not what a man has that makes him great," he said, "but what he does with what he has." He pointed out that the Lord has promised blessings according to the way we live the laws upon which these blessings are predicated. "Self control is one of the great keys to happiness," he said. He emphasized the importance im-portance of the Law of the Fast and told of the good being be-ing accomplished by the Des-eret Des-eret Industries program. Other speakers in the afternoon after-noon session were DelMoine Christensen, stake Sunday School superintendent; C. Lynn Hanks, high council advisor to the Sunday School; Carwin Williams, a former member of Sunday School stake board; Michael Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jones; Melanie Mendenhall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Mendenhall, and Pauline Bates, who recited a poem. The concluding speaker was President William J. Pratt, who pointed out that actions bespeak the kind of person we are, and urged all "to accomplish accom-plish the things in life which have been designated by our Father in Heaven for us to accomplish." In conclusion, he sang "I Am a Mormon Boy" accompanied by Mrs. Jane Richins. Music for the morning session ses-sion of the conference was by the Mapleton Second Ward Choir under the direction of Mrs. Floyd Tuttle, accompanied accompan-ied by Marjorie Allan. A combined chorus of Gaynote and Blazer children of the ward Primaries, sang in the afternoon session with Mrs. Ronald Graves conducting and Mrs. Grant Richins, accompanist. accom-panist. Prayers for the conference were offered by Rodney Burt, Blaine Murd ock, Vernon Castleton, and J. M. Hunter. Golden K. Hanson conducted congregational singing and prelude pre-lude and postlude music was played by Mrs. Warren Tonks. |
