Show Letter to the editor Movie project favored in open letter Dear Citizens, In regard to the theatre project, pro-ject, may I make a few comments. com-ments. The one criticism I have heard most is that it is Socialistic. Let me state here that I am not for socialism, but, I do not class this as socialism. so-cialism. We are not sending our money to Washington to feed several bureaus and then get a fraction back. Every cent will be used to promote it at home, not to mention the gratis gra-tis work that has and will go into it. If private enterprise would furnish this theatre, it would be different, but since it won't, it looks like it is up to the citizens. As I understand the project, we citizens are to help it get on its feet, after which time it will carry itself. In 1912 my father bought stock in the Mapleton Amusement Amuse-ment Company, which built the Mapleton Amusement Hall. This building has been used for plays (home troups and traveling groups), dances, basketball, bas-ketball, banquets, reunions, roller skating, clubs and other types of amusements. I think if my father could comment on that money spent, he would say that he had been paid back a thousand fold just from the enjoyment of his family and the others of the town. Springville has been noted for it's culture. Why? Just because be-cause public spirited citizens got together in the early days to provide a theatre, opera house, dance hall and such things to provide better entertainment en-tertainment for their citizens. To me this is Americanism UNITED COMMUNITY EFFORT EF-FORT FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY, without asking the government to do it for us. The strangest part of it all to me is that when the Mem- orial Park was developed for ball playing-, no one said, "Socialism." "So-cialism." When North Park was bought and developed for adult baseball, football, rodeo and riding club it was not termed socialism. When the Senior Citizens pitched in to use a gift from the city, we didn't think of it as Socialistic. The old library has been turned turn-ed over to the Daughters of Pioneers, clubs and Chamber of Commerce, but it hasn't been branded Socialistic. We could add to it the Golf Course and Kelly's Grove. I don't know how much it is costing the city, but to me, these are projects to make a better Springville. But now comes a project, primarily for our young people peo-ple who can't fight an adult battle and what happens? We've pretty well taken care of us adults, but what (other than during baseball season) have we provided for our young people. The cops tell us that during baseball season, the vandalism drops considerably. consider-ably. I would think somewhere for young people to go at night on weekends would also eliminate some, by getting them in off streets. And I understand un-derstand that the young people peo-ple are to be an active part of this project. If I had to transport youngsters young-sters to another town and back for shows, I'm sure I'd spend more than 75 cents a month to do it and not get a free ticket with it. My children have had the privilege of being able to go to a show in Springville, Spring-ville, now I would like to help make it possible, for others to have the same opportunity.
