Show Mapleton firemen commended for cooperative civic project The Mapleton Fire Department Depart-ment is not only receiving many fine compliments from townspeople and city officials for their cooperative efforts and civic pride, but this week, they received a letter from Richard P. Klason, deputy state forester, citing them for their accomplishments. The men of the department recently built a fine fire fighting fight-ing piece of equipment from a ten-wheeler army surplus truck given them by the state forest service. The new 1000-gallon truck will be used for county Roper Evans, Norman Graves, Ron Graves, Rolan Hansen, Ralph Harmer, J. Fay Jensen, Quinton Lowe, Leonard Mason, Wave Miguel, Herb Miner, Lyle Paulson, Ned Poulson, Don Roundy, Neil Steiner, LaVere Tippetts, Cliff Taylor. To celebrate The Mapleton department is planning numerous activities in observance of National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 3 to 9, reports Chief Miguel. On Friday, Oct. 8, the school children will be taken through (continued on page 12, col. 6) While the new truck holds 1000 gallons of water, the other oth-er two trucks, one of which was also -built by the men, holds 500 gallons of water and both are still in use, making a total of three units. To accomodate the added pieces, a new stall is being built at the fire station in the civic building. It was in 1957, that citizens of Mapleton decided it was time they had a fire department depart-ment of their own. The idea met with enthusiastic response from a lively group of townspeople. towns-people. Through the efforts of the Lions Club and the Jay-cees, Jay-cees, and with cooperation and matching funds from the city, work began on the building and fire equipment. The department de-partment now lists 25 volunteer volun-teer firemen and three pieces of fire fighting equipment all reported superior to any other city in the state the size of Mapleton, and of many cities much larger. The firemen include: Neno Antonino, Norman Barker, D. W. Bills, Dick Bills, Lynn Bjar-nson, Bjar-nson, Bill Bleggi, Johnnie Bleg-gi, Bleg-gi, Ray Bulow, Joe Carnesecca, forest and brush fires as well as on local runs, according to the fire chief, Wave Miguel. The letter from the forester noted that the newly built equipment will fill a real need in the county and state as it can get around in very rough country and reach high brush or grass fires. Men cooperate Using much of their spare time during the summer, all of the Mapleton firemen had a hand in the building of the equipment, the chief reported.
