Springville counted with Nielson's foul shot in opening op-ening of the game and Spanish Fork tied it up immediately after with a free throw. This was the only time the game was tied up and outside of a Spanish Fork 7-6 margin early in the first period, the Devils held the lead throughout the contest. Nielson had a big first quarter quar-ter scoring 7 points with Reid getting 4, Allred 2, Bird 2 and Thorpe 2, to lead Spanish 17-16 17-16 at the first quarter. Ron Bird and Roger Reid had a big second quarter scoring scor-ing 10 and 8 points respectively with Thorpe hitting 3 charity tosses to bring the count at 38 for Springville and 33 for Spanish at halftime. The Red Devils tallied 18 points in the third quarter, divided di-vided among six scorers. All-red All-red hit for 2, Thorpe 2, Reid 5, Nielson 1, Shepherd 4, and Bird 4. Quarter score read 56-49. A thrilling last quarter climaxed cli-maxed the hard-fought battle. Thorpe flipped a nice overhead shot to start the scorjng for Springville after Gustin lead an attack that netted the Dons three straight baskets to close the 56-49 quarter gap to 56-53 before Thorpe connected. Spanish Span-ish stole an easy lay-in, Bird and Allred sank a basket each. Reid missed a foul try and Thorpe dunked in a basket as the Devils ran their lead to 64-55 with 2:56 left on the clock. Spanish came roaring back with a foul toss by Gustin, Gus-tin, another point from the free throw lane and then a basket and two more from the foul |
