By MIKK CANNON Retord Reporter "Very young" is how fifth-year I 'a rowan High School football coach Scott Doubck describes this year's Hams team. We're really, really a .voting team, he says. Despite the youth, there is optimism. The attitude's really good this ear," says Doubek. These kids really want to be winners." Just how young is this year's team? mt of about :?() players reporting for training sessions, half are freshmen and sophmores. Only six seniors are hack, lorming the nucleus of this year's squad. "We lost nine seniors last year and all nine went both ways," explained l)oulxk. "Hopefully these kids will be able to fill in." Depends on seniors Doubek will be counting strongly on his upperclassmcn to carry much of the load during the upcoming season which begins tomorrow in Parowan .against, of all teams, Kanab. Seniors include Gordon Mortensen, a ti l. 185-pound tackle who will be a key lineman lor the Hams. Accompanying him on the line will be Dan Rex at 6-4, 170 and move-in Dan Carter. The effectiveness ef-fectiveness of the big men up front will largely determine Parowan's success in 1981. Chad Robinson will see plenty of action at cornerback and linebacker. Kelly Orton will contribute significantly and 5-11, 150-pound Robbie Stevens will handle quarterbacking, running back and defensive back chores. Filling the "skill" positions such as receivers, defensive secondary and the quarterback slot will be crucial for the Hams, according to Doubek. Key figures Other key figures in this year's season include Alan Burton and Doug Rogerson, possibly sharing quarterback quar-terback duties. Rogerson will see action as a tight end along with Mike Hobinson. Neil Orton will help handle receiving duties and Stevens, Orton, Chris Robb and Tony Orton will be carrying the ball a lot. The Rams will be running mostly a double tight end, I formation offense. According to their coach, they expect to do more running this year than passing. Defensively Parowan will operate out of a 5-2 with man to man passing coverage. "We'll be strong on the defensive line," says Doubek. Rogerson. Robinson, Rex, Mortensen, Mor-tensen, and Carter will be the five doing the heavy hitting up front. Chad Robinson, Todd Robinson and Troy Moreno will be sharing time at the linebacker positions. As far as Region 12 goes, Kanab looks to be this year's favorite. "Kanab will be the team to beat this year," says Doubek. They have a wealth of experience ex-perience returning that gives them the edge in region play. Beaver should also be tough with a lot of players returning from last year's team. Doubek names Milford as a viable dark horse in the region. The Deseret News had Parowan picked to finish third in region 12 in a recent pre-season poll. Doubek feels, despite the inexperience, that the Rams can be competitive if they can stay healthy. The opening game against Kanab will be crucial. A PHS victory would get the Rams off on a tremendous note. "We've always played Kanab well at home," stresses Doubek. Iwii I'arowan players prepare to lower the boom on a lellow Ram runner.
