Show School a great time for safety; also time for total involvement Today Iron County young people will be returning to school, and that fact means several things to the citizenry of the County as a whole. First, and probably most importantly, it is now time to reassess our driving habits and begin to be a little . more careful. Streets and sidewalks throughout the area, especially around elementary schools, will be loaded with pedestrians and bicyclists. Unfortunately youngsters aren't as careful as they sometimes should be, so the brunt of the burden falls squarely upon the drivers in the County. Please be careful; a child's life is precious and irreplaceable. Especially be more careful around school zones. Signs are posted, lights flash and policemen are on duty, but sometimes that doesn't even seem to solve the problem. Second, it becomes time once again for parents to become involved with their children's schools. We hear year after year the pleas of parent-teacher organizations to have parent input, and to some extent, possible a large extent, such input does come in but not enough. Every parent should be concerned enough about his or her child's education to take the time to talk with teachers and to attend assemblies and other activities when possible. Along the same line, the schools in the County offer a huge variety of activities and events for the community to take part in. Athletics, concerts and assemblies are only a small part of the offerings for students and parents alike. It seems that too often in the past Southern Utah State College and the community have been looked to for cultural and entertainment events. The schools have been the overlooked groups, and the overlooking has been unfortunate. Third, it becomes time for students to become ; ' involved. They, even more than their parents, should take advantage of the vast opportunities and experiences of every kind offered by their schools. This advice, especially to students, probably sounds trite and repetitive; but it is important. Schools, in many ways, dictate the future direction of our County and, indeed, the nation. No one parents, citizens or students should take them lightly. |
