Some are meeting that challenge by sending sons to gain two years of training in the ag-technology ag-technology program at Utah State University. In the last 15 years, nearly 250 young men have taken the program. It trains students stu-dents to work in a machinery dealership either in maintenance main-tenance or parts or to return to the farm and use their mechanical expertise to advantage ad-vantage in the farm enterprise. enter-prise. Most important, these ag-technology ag-technology students who go back to the farm understand the importance of consistent preventive maintenance required re-quired to keep todays expensive ex-pensive equipment operating operat-ing properly. They are most likely to perform the preventive pre-ventive maintenance when it should be done and not put it off. They are well aware that if you lose an engine or a transmission you are talking talk-ing about repair costs of $4,000 - $5,000 rather than the $500 - $1,000 it used to be. Also they know that those breakdowns usually come when you are heavily involved in harvesting, so a week or two of down time hampering your harvest may cost more than the machine. Also when they buy a piece of equipment, they are more likely to buy one that meets the needs of the farm oper ation. They're not going to buy a big tractor just because be-cause the neighbor has one. They realize that it might be wiser to buy two smaller tractors than a big one. If one breaks down, it doesn't shut down the whole operation. oper-ation. They understand monitoring monitor-ing devices on the more complex machines. They know whether the monitoring monitor-ing device is going haywire, or if the machine itself must be repaired. On transmissions transmis-sions they know enough to tell if it can be adjusted or if the machine must be shut down so it can be fixed. fix-ed. The decision for any repair re-pair during harvest is critical cri-tical whether to shut down immediately or to put it off until a later date when the harvest season is over. If you keep running it you may damage the machine. With a high cost machine such as a big combine, the dam -age could cost more than if you lost a portion of the crop. This special program includes in-cludes mechanics oriented classes on campus along with other selected elective classes and a summer oj working on the job in an implement dealer's shop. The experience equips the students who desire to step into jobs In machinery dealerships. deal-erships. For those who plan to return to the farm, the knowledge helps them meet the challenges of modern machinery. A SIZE FOR EVERY JOB; Ron's.Chevrolet carries a good inventory of Case and Heston-New Holland farm equipment. As the picture illustrates, they have the size you need for the job, and they are ready for delivery. Farmers depend on the right equipment equip-ment to save time and money. |
