Matheson has tossed his hat into the arena for the State Senate post being vacated by Dixie Leavitt, who has announced an-nounced his candidacy for the Governorship. Matheson will seek the Republican Nomination for District 29 which represents the five county area of Kane, Beaver, Garfield, Iron and Washington. Matheson has. a long history of public service. He is now completing his fourth term 14 years as an Iron County Commissioner. In addition he has served on the Governor's Advisory Council since its inception in 1968 and is presently serving serv-ing as chairman of that body. During his tenure as a Commissioner he has been affiliated with the Utah Association of Counties and is currently serving as president. He is also a member of the board and on the organization's road committee. com-mittee. The candidate previously served as chairman of the original Five County Association As-sociation and for an interim period chaired the Five County Association of Governments Gov-ernments during an illness of Commissioner Keith Smith. He said, "I opposed the withdrawal of Iron County from the AOG on the basis of loss of payroll revenue to Cedar City and Iron County."
