Show r ! An awkward situation was avoided this week with the postponement of the next Milford Mil-ford City Council meeting. Annually, the political Mass Meetings conflict with the local council meetings, either forcing local political leaders to miss the council meeting or the mass meeting. meet-ing. This year, the first time since this writer has been in Milford, the Council meeting meet-ing has been postponed to allow al-low the members to attend the mass meetings. Council meeting will be held Tuesday, May 18, at 8:00 p.m. for any and all business. -0- This column managed to get under Mayor Young's skin last week. He was upset because we cast a shadow of i doubt on the availability of ! flag pole materials. r Evidently, there is a ' breakdown in communication j between the Mayor and the city crew, who presumably will put the flag pole up, and j they didn't know where the materials were. We hope this communication communica-tion gap has been breached, because we still think 'time 's a wasting'! Disregarding the fact that it would lie nice to have the stars and stripes flyingover j Milford on a daily basis, other than the Post Office, P there are a number of other reasons why we need a flag pole. I -0- Last October 2nd, Milford was presented with a huge ! flag, designating it as a bicentennial bi-centennial city. This distin-quishes distin-quishes Milford as one of only a few cities in the United i States to qualify for the bicentennial bi-centennial in three categories: categor-ies: Horizon (the picnic shelter to be built this sum -mer); Heritage (the historical histori-cal park now being worked on); and Fesitval (includes a number of events throughout through-out the year, climaxing with a parade and presentation of Milford's Centennial Pageant). Pag-eant). At the time of the presentation. presen-tation. Counc.ilnien agreed that an American flag should be purchased, large enough to fly with the bicentennial flag, and a flag pole constructed con-structed to fly them during the bicentennial year. -0- In January, this writer brought the need for a flag : pole to the attention of the new Council. Mayor Young requested time to acquire materials for a flag pole. In March, prompted by comments made in this column, col-umn, Councilman Dalton j questioned the status of the I flag pole. Mayor Young as- sured everyone that the ma- j terial for the pole was available, avail-able, but that cable for the lanyard ('Between' said guy ! lines last week) was not to be found. Councilman Dalton immediately volunteered the needed cable. ,;j -0- Four months had elapsed when the COUNTY NEWS was told materials were not available, which we reported report-ed last week. As of press time, no flag pole had been raised. We don't care if the problem is lack of communication from Mayor Young, if the material mater-ial is available or not, or any other excuses. -0- Fact is, that local citizens dug deep in their pocket to qualify Milford for the right to fly this bicentennial flag. Flying it each day will serve to say 'thank you' to those who contributed. It will serve to tell visitors toMil-ford toMil-ford that we are proud of our heritage, that we welcome the future, and are willing to work together to insure that ! future. In the years to come, the i Stars and Stripes flying daily can continue to carry this message, but only during this bicentennial year will the bicentennial bi-centennial flag have signifi- cant meaning. ' The two-year bicentennial celebration officially ends j July 4th, just 2-12 months I off. True, other bicentennial activities will continue after that time. But as we've said before, 'time's a wasting'. j -0- I It is with regret that we j learn of plans to close the t (Continued on Page 2) y HERE'S MORE ABOUT JUST BETWEEN Hong Kong Cafe from 1 1 p.m . to 6 a.m. daily, starting today, to-day, Thursday. Of course, many will blame the Hong Kong and U.P. Railroad for not working out their differences. However, criticism probably has more to do with the closing than any other factor and most everyone at one time or another is guilty of this. It's always easy to be critical of local business -and easiest of all are retail establishments with little or no local competition. The human animal likes change, and resents being confined. But as one who has lived in small communities most of my life, we know that Milford is fortunate to have a restaurant as good as the Hong Kong. Many larger communities have to' struggle along with much less. Even though we personally did not utilize the restaurant during the hours it willbe closed, we're sure we, too, will feel the loss. |
