X "Grab the bull by the horns" is not just a figure of speech to members of the WSC Rodeo Club. To them it's what a cowboy does to avoid being stomped by a 600-pound rampaging bull. If the cowboy wrestles the animal to the ground quickly enough he walks off with the blue ribbon. But there's a good chance he will walk away with only sore muscles and the determination to be faster next time. In addition to steer wrestling, the Rodeo team members rope calves, ride bucking broncos and bulls, and tie goats quicker than you can say "get your stupid hoof off my foot." Other events are barrel racing and break-away roping. Rodeo is a physical and competitive sport. Weber's sixteen team members go against eight schools in the Rocky Mountain Region and annually represent WSC in the nationals held in Bozeman, Montana, in June. Currently they are leading the Region in total team points. Last year in Bozeman, the team finished in fifth place in the nation. The club sponsored a national Intercollegiate Rodeo on Feburary 17 and 18. This year's attendance totalled 3,000 spectators and 135 athletes, representing nine colleges and universities. The men and women on the team are majoring in a variety of studies, such as manufacturing engineering, elementary education, secretarial science and general education. According to faculty advisor Lynn Cor-kridge, 600 points is a perfect year. Kyle Kosoff has the best chance of winning the national first place in calf roping because he has 530 points now. The club was recently nominated for the Crystal Crest Organization of the year award. The members goals are simple: to obtain a college education, to provide participation in the sport of rodeo and to promote an appreciation of the western way of life. Team members are: Kyle Kosoff, Craig Kosoff, Phett Plocker, Robyn fielding, Chris Paskett, Chris Freed, Jim Hoffman, Kirt Mockli, Mike Mendez, Clay Hodson, Lisa Okelberry, Lorna Christensen, Jill Thurgood, Ken Stillman, Bret Hadley, Josh Reynolds. s !4l I - 1 .'A Photo courtesu of James Falne Robyn fielding Photo courtesy of Payne Chris Pasket |
