"In order to make the year good we need good people in there (working on committees)," said Walker. The new officers are opening up applications for anyone who is interested in working with ASWSC. Positions are available on standing committees, "ACT" cont'd, from front page. the ACT, however, would affect all of the schools in the college. Causes for this would include, but not necessarily be limited to, the fact that fewer students might apply for admission andor that more students would have to incur the cost and time of a remedial class. A second reason for delaying the ACT score change is that remedial fees for fall quarter will now be $63 for each class. "The new $63 fee still will not cover the expense of administering the classes, but it will help," said Cheney. "We have to raise them to survive. The fees we charge are the basis on which I hired enough teachers to teach the classes. The deadline to turn in applications is June 5. Southwick, Jacobson and Walker, after being elected last Thursday, are already beginning to work hard to make sure next year is a success. For next year to be a success, students that are willing to put out the effort and do a good job are encouraged to become an active part of ASWSC. we are punishing students but we are not." Cheney added that he wished the college did not have to charge a special fee for anything, but those are the fiscal realities. The third reason for the delay is a philosophical one, said Cheney. 'The ACT test doesn't directly measure the things we want to measure. Ifs generally reliable but it is not specifically reliable. It may or may not be predictive of that student's skills. We would like to do some research." That planned research will be a sizeable random selection that involves "looking at ACT scores and then analyzing the very first papers students write see "ACT" on page 6.
