V , I ' .. i . 1 by Stephanie DeGraw Staff Reporter 'Qo Greek' echoes through Weber State's campus four times per year. The sororities and fraternities acquaint students with a Rush program each quarter and 'Greek Week' in the spring. "We try to let people really understand what Greek organizations do," said Marty Mobley, vice president of Pi Kappa Alpha. "There are many things that can be gained from joining; like leadership skills, life-time friendships, or community service experiences."Rush is open to all interested full-time students. "Our biggest Rush is usually at the first of the year," explained advisor Darnel Haney, Associate Dean of Students. "The women usually have a fun night, a serious night and then a party. The men often have a presentation and a party on the same evening."''Weber State has four fraternities and four sororities. There may be more in the future. The soroities are cordinated by Panhellenic and the fraternities are cordinated by the Inner Fraternal Council. Together Panhellenic and 1FC advise and plan programs for the Greeks. Each group has a representative to the council. The sororities have two locals; Lambda Delta Sigma and LaDianaeda. Two groups are national; Alpha Chi Omega and Chi Omega. The difference is the locals can only be found in Ogden like L.D. which was founded in early 1900's or only found in the West like L.D.S. The nationals have chapter through out the country and many were begun in the early nineteen hundreds. Greek Week has bathtub races, cook-outs, mud-wrestling, drive-in movie parties, jello snarfing, seven leg race, tug-of-war, rootbeer chug, Softball, awards dinner. LDSSA Busy on Campus LDSSA is the abbreviation of Latter-Day Saint Student Association. This association is part of the Ogden LDS Institute of Religion. The group is headed by a council of 15 members consisting of a presidency and 11 committee chairpersons. The eleven committees include: high school relations, sports, focus, Gospel In Action, Spirit Of Place, registration and recruitment, Lambda Delta Sigma, Sigma Gamma Chi, Publicity, Good Times, and Programs. The group as a whole consists of approximately 200 students. The purpose of LDSSA is to give students who are attending the Institute the opportunity to grow and to find a balance in body, mind and spirit. To accomplish this goal many activities are provided in each of these three areas. A sports committee sponsors basketball and Softball, as well as other sports tournaments, quarterly. Any WSC student is welcome to participate. For social development, the Good Times committee sponsors an activity every Friday night where all students on campus can attend. These activities include stomps, movies, square dances, professional musical The fraternities that are national include; Pike Kappa Alpha (Pikes) Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) and Beta Theta Pi (Beta). The local fraternity is Sigma Gamma Chi (Sigma) although it has chapters throughout the west. Many of the ideals and traditions enhance the college experience. Service is a part of greek-life. Sororities and fraternities annually participate in special Olympics, Handicap Awareness Day and the Red Cross' Blood Drive. "There's nothing like seeing the happy look on a child's face in Special Olympics," smiled Mobley. Another ideal upheld is academic excellence. Alpha Chi has study-buddies who are required to study together for a certain number of hours per week. Lambda Delta Sigma has scholarship pearls for sisters who arhipvp af Ipast a 7i 5 fiPA rliirinn a nnartpr True sisterhood was displayed by Chi Omega and Alpha Chi when two of their sisters were finalists for Homecoming Queen ' this year. When the Queen Melissa Bailey, Chi Omega, and a runner-up, Jeannie Larsen, Alpha Chi, were announced at the fall pep ral- ly, their sisters were there with hugs and friendships. Dixon Drive in front of Weber State is often painted with sorority and fraternity logos 1 during Homecoming and Greek Week in May. The groups come in the midnight hours with flashlights and paint buckets in hand. Fraternities also stress the importance of service, academics, brotherhood and leadership. Some of the fraternities have their own trademarks, such as an old fashioned fire truck belonging to the Pikes. All of the fraternities have bombs, paddles and special bathtubs they race during Greek Week. Greek Week in the spring features a variety of activities that anyone can participate in and get to know the Greeks of Weber State. entertainment and GOOD TIMESI Once everv month LDSSA invites a nue.st speaker on Sunday night tor a Fireside. These guest speakers talk on various topics to inform and enlighten. Every Friday at noon, the Institute holds a lecture forum where n. J! L I J! uuujidiiuniy yuesi speakers discuss many gospel subjects. The Gospel In Action committee provides opportunities for service in the community as well as on campus. Visits to hospitals and rest homes are organized and the committee is involved with WSC in sponsoring the Special Olympics. The Institute Chorale and Exhibition Folk Dancers provide entertainment for the Ogden community. These two groups perform throughout the community each quarter and produce three major shows which take place at Christmas, in the spring and in a late summer pageant. The groups also go on an annual spring tour to surrounding states. LDSSA supports activities on WSC campus and as a group participates in many. Each year LDSSA participates in Songfest and enjoys forming cheering sections at WSC athletic events. |
