Show Farewell Brad by Brad Howell ASWSC President As the end of the quarter nears, I have been looking back over the year and reflecting upon the many experiences and opportunities that have come to me as a result of serving as a student officer. It has been a tremendous experience to serve this year as studentbody president and I sincerely hope that the efforts we have made as officers this year will prove to be beneficial to the studentbody in years to come. With this year's experience, I have truly obtained a more educated perspective of the processes and function of the college and a deeper appreciation of the efforts of our administration, faculty and staff in providing for our success here at Weber. I have sincere admiration for the administrative leadership of the college. Our college president is an exemplar of successful management and leadership principles and has wisely surrounded himself with the expertise and talent of his great vice presidents and staff. 1 have witnessed their sincere dedication in providing for the interests of our studentbody concerning academics, tuition and financing of our education, and they have demonstrated real concern for the students as well as for the needs of our teachers and professionals.Serving as a member on numberous committees and boards this year, as well as being in the classroom, has increased my interaction with our faculty and provided me ... s : S r I x f photo by Dave Memmott G. Bradly Howell with a greater sense of appreciation for all that the faculty do for us as students. We really have outstanding teachers at Weber. My appreciation for student government has developed considerably. There really are issues of importance to ourselves as students that are carried on through the business of the school that need student input and voice and 5(gn-o-Tuesday, May 22, 1984 7A it has been a real education to be a part of the decision making that occurs. I really feel that we have been successful this year in making good on campaign promises made last year to increase the demographic representation of the campus in student government and its overall effectiveness through the development and adoption of a new constitution and structure of student government. It will be great to see it functioning. I am convinced it will bring new life to involvement in student government which will inevitably serve the studentbody more effectively. I don't think I could say enough about all the great people with whom it has been my privilege to work with. There are a lot of extremely dedicated students and professionals who do so much for the college. My greatest memories of this year's experience will be the great associations and friendships that I have been able to make. I would particularly like to thank Dr. Kay Evans for all she has done for us this year as Dean of Student Affairs. She really takes an interest in what we do as student officers and provides the often needed insight and experience into many decisions that are made. Also, I would like to thank Monty Shupe and Grant Protzman and Rick Sline who have gone the extra mile many times this year in helping us in student government with ideas, experience and friendship. I am confident that our newly elected student officers will serve well and will bring new and innovative ideas to student government that will be of benefit to Weber State. In conclusion, I am grateful for this great opportunity to have been the ASWSC President. This year's experience has taught me and provided for me in many ways far more than I have been able to give. I have confidence that the great tradition of Weber State will continue and that we will continue to see new traditions develop that will truly see Weber become the very finest undergraduate college in the country. Hello Jon Power Base Shifts On April 5 and 6, WSC students voted for and passed a constitutional amendment to restructure student government. The amendment reduced the number of vice-presidental offices from six to two and increased the number of senatorial positions from seven to sixteen. The amendment proposal was the result of ASWSC president Brad Howell's initiative to redesign the structure of student government so that it operated more effectively and efficiently. Howell formed an ad hoc committee of students, staff, and faculty members who worked for over a month hammering out the proposal. The result of the amendment is a decentralization of ASWSC. The two vice presidents will preside over student committees that will perform the functions that were previously fulfilled by vice presidents. Specifically, the academic vice president will preside over the student senate and will address academic concerns. The executive vice president will be responsible for cultural and student activities. The increased membership in the student senate will ensure that all WSC students have fair and broad representation. Newly-created senatorial seats include HonorsBQS, traditional students, non-traditional students, disabled students, international students, Residence Hall students, Black Scholars United, Hispanic students, and native American students. r A, - ,1' St " i - .rs Jon Soutbwick Jon Soutbwick was the newly elected elections were held studentbody president that will replace Brad Southwick defeating Howell for the next academic year.
