Show Comments From Armistice Day Observers By MABEL JAKVTS The Stars and Stripes went marching by. On every corner were crowds whose hearts were stirred. Women's hands went to their hearts and many men saw The Flag and remembered re-membered to remove their hats in acknowledgement. But in the same crowds were many others who merely saw The Flag go by and failed to register. There were strangers among us on Armistice Day, as there are frequently, -on days of public celebrations and in several instances they were heard to comment on the laxity of local citizens, especially es-pecially men who failed to observe that one little courtesy prescribed as an evidence of loyalty, "Hats off, The Flag is passing by!" Also in the public meeting, announcement was made that at the conclusion of the prayer and the singing of the National Anthem, the color bearers would retire the colors. This beautiful flag service is so seldom done before the public, and since people were not asked to remain in their places until this official order was observed, the aisles were filled with people who forgot, and the color bearers had a distinct problem of winding their way among the jostling crowds. We are patriotic at heart in St. George, but to the observer, too often we fail to give the positive evidence. And again, as during the street parade, strangers asked, ""What's wrong here?" With such an active Legion Post and Auxiliary, it seems we should receive the necessary training and not permit this very blatant negligence to continue. |
