Show YOUR NUTRITION COMMITTEE presents in cooperation with "Now is the time for every American Ameri-can to help conserve the food resources of America by "Cleaning up his plate!" This is the message of the State and National Nutrition Nutri-tion Program of War Foods Administration. Ad-ministration. Food is acknowledged as one of the vital weapons of war and food conservation is urged as one of the best contributions every family can make at the present time, says Mrs. George Wells, Washington county chairman of Utah's National Nutrition Committee. Com-mittee. As the invasion on all fronts speeds the time of Victory, the responsibility of America in feeding feed-ing the world increases. Production Product-ion facilities and capacity are limited, says the report, and the increasing demands will rapidly deplet the stocks of food now on hand. ' Only by eliminating food waste can the U. S. hope to meet . these requirements. Figures show that the civilian population uses 75 percent of food supplies; the armed forces 13 per cent; Allies, 10 per cent and Territorial Ter-ritorial needs, 2 per cent. There is no surplus, says the report. It is estimated that 300 lbs. of food per person is wasted annually with a number of sources contributing. contri-buting. Poor storage and handling, poor display and selling in markets, mark-ets, waste in preparation and serving in the home and in public eating places are among the sources listed. It is felt that tons of this waste can be avoided by every family checking up on their meal planning, marketing, storage, preparation and cleaning up the plates at meal time. If each family would keep a record of waste for one week, it is believed they will be convinced of the need of curtailing this waste in order to avoid shortages in the months ahead, says Mrs. Wells. |
