Show Memorial Services Held for Pvt. Rex 0. Russell News of Death Received By Mother Here In St. George, Sunday, July 30 ROCKVILLE, Utah M i 1 i t a r y memorial services were held in the Rockville ward chapel, Tuesday, Tues-day, Aug. 1, 1944, for Pvt. Rex O. Russell, 21 who was killed in action somewhere in Italy, July 10. Word of his death was received re-ceived over the week end by his mother, Mrs. Charles L. Walker of St. George. The services were under direction direct-ion of the American Legion Post No. 100, Hurricane, with Bp. Guy DeMille conducting. Music Numbers Music numbers included a vocal trio, "Prayer Is the Soul's Sincere Desire," Lamar Terry, Marie Broderick and Arvena DeMille; solo, "Goin' Home," Ruth Stout of LaVerkin; cornet solo, "Prayer Perfect," Lafayette Staheli accompanied ac-companied by Irene Hinton, both of Hurricane; solo, "Sleep Soldier Boy," by Whitford Gifford with Mrs. Waldon Ballard accompanying; accompany-ing; ''Jesus, Lover of My Soul," by the Springdale male quartette. Speakers were Marvin Terry of Rockville, Homer Englestead, Legion Leg-ion commander of Hurricane, Charles Allen, legionaire of Leeds, and John R. 'Crawford of Spring-dale. Spring-dale. Mr. Terry told intimately of Pvt.Russell and his family, of his work in the Rockville ward, of his mother being widowed when he was a baby and her love and sacrifices to rear her family and of his willingness to help his mother and his work as a scout. Both Mr. Englestead and Mr. Allen paid tribute to this soldier who has given his life for his fellow men and of the great contributions con-tributions mothers are making in the gift of their sons. Mr. Crawford spoke on the great love of those who give their lives for their friends. Bp. DeMille made brief closing remarks, telling of Pvt. Russell's talent in music of which he gave freely for the church and the community. Prayers were by Bp. Alvin Hardy of Springdale and Arthur (Continued on page four) Pvt. Services were concluded at the cemetery and included a trumpet duet, "God Be With You Till We Meet Again" by Lafe Staheli and Louis Fish; dedication was by Ileber Hirschi with the military salute and Taps following. IVorn In Rockville Pvt. Rex O. Russell was born in Rockville, Sept. 6, 1922, a son of Oscar and Alice Brown Russell. He completed the grade school in Rockville and completed two years of high school in Cedar City. He was gifted as a musician, and was cook at the CCC camp at Zion National Park for four years. He entered military service on Nov. 17, 1942, training at Camp Gruber, Okla.; Camp Polk, La.; and Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He shipped to North Africa in October 1943, and went from there to Italy, where he was killed in action July 10th. Surviving are his mother, and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Walker, St. George; Mrs. Lou-ella Lou-ella Gifford of Springdale; and two brothers, Pfc. Sherman Russell, Rus-sell, who is somewhere in the South Pacific; and Pfc. Orvil Russell, Rus-sell, who is in England. |
