Royal Whitehall Palace Where Henry VIII Married Until the Eighteenth century the royal palace of Whitehall occupied occu-pied most of the land between Charing Cross and Westminster, London. Whitehall was known as York place when Cardinal Wolsey possessed it, and not until it passed Into the hands of Henry VHI was It known as Whitehall. It was when Wolsey fell from his greatness In 1529 that Henry VIII seized his property and converted It Into a palace. For more than 150 years Whitehall was the chief residence of the court in London. It was there that Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn In 1533. In later years Queen Elizabeth maintained the grandeur established estab-lished by her father. In front of this palace Charles I was executed in 1649. Charles II made It a scene of revelry and intrigue. James n fled from Whitehall In 1GS8. The only part saved from the fire of 1698 was the banqueting banquet-ing hall, which Is now the museum of the United Service Institution.
