Also talks by William Whitney, who is head of the state fish hatcheries and James Baldwin, who has recently retired from the forest service and ranger on the Dixie National forest. A general discussion of the problems connected with the organization was entered into by past board members and members mem-bers of the federation. In accepting the presidency, Mr. (Continued on page eight) Game Association (Continued from first page) Lund declared that he was pleased to be elected head of the federation federa-tion and that he would do everything every-thing in his power to promote its policies in every way that would better conditions in this county and state. He declared that he saw special need for eliminating poor sportsmen who used illegal bait to catch fish and who went beyond the limit and in other ways destroyed game to the detriment detri-ment of every other sportsman. He urged that sportsmen report any violation of the game laws that they observed. Speaking along this same line, Secretary Frei pointed out that this problem was one of education and that sportsmen, and children, who are future sportsmen, in particular par-ticular should be educated to reasons rea-sons why these laws should be obeyed. Whitney Talks Mr. Whitney presented four talks during his stay here, one before the Rotary club at noon, two to school children, and the final one at the game meeting. He stressed the theme that not the dollar value, but other values were greater. He listed them in the following order: Esthetic, educational, edu-cational, recreational and economic. econo-mic. He declared that these values were being recognized more all of the time and stressed the particular values of each. He declared de-clared that the deer herd on the Dixie National forest could not be equaled anywhere else and stated that everything should be done for its protection. Twenty pair of Chucker partridges par-tridges and 25 pair of turkeys have been recently released in the county. These he explained, were in the nature of an experiment and if they proved satisfactory, would add materially to the game birds of this section. Mr. Baldwin discussed the various vari-ous problems related to sports and their possibilities on the Dixie forest in particular. He closed by stating that in his opinion as a sportsman, and not as a ranger from which service he was retired the day before, that there were too many deer on the Dixie forest and unless they were removed, it would prove very detrimental to the herd. |
