Show BUY A "POPPY" Tuesday, May 19 will he Poppy Day in St. George. On this day the American Legion auxiliary will again -offer the people of St. George the opportunity of contributing con-tributing in a small fashion to the disabled war veterans veter-ans for whom the war suffering is not over yet. An important feature in connection with relief work carried on by individual posts is the hard and fast rule which forbids the expenditures of Buddy Poppy proceeds for any cause excepting relief. Each genuine Buddy Poppy carries a copyright label which identifies it as. the handiwork of disabled and needy ex-service men, the majority being made by government hospitals through arrangement with the U. S. Veterans Bureau. The Veterans of the Foreign Wars was the first veteran vet-eran organization to undertake and successfully conruct the Poppy sale movement on a nation-wide basis. The first V. F. W. National Poppy sale was held in 1922, using us-ing French poppies made by women and children of the devastated areas. The following year, with greater demand, de-mand, the organization had to resort to poppies made commercially. The present plan of manufacture was developed de-veloped in 1924 to extend the relief afforded by the poppies pop-pies to those who were disabled and. needy but still capable cap-able of employment, and the V. F. W. Buddy Poppy factory fac-tory organized, where only those handicapped by war disabilities were employed in putting together the emblems. |
