Show The Voice of The People Ifc-mocracy, the .servant of ptilitios Editor Washington County News: It is quite generally conceded that the most effective cure for our economic ills is to go tu Cue polls and vote an intelligent ticket. This, in my humble judgment, is sophistry simple and pure, as well as an impossibility. I make the assertion on the presumption pre-sumption that human wisdom is incompetent to reach into the soul of man and determine the tendencies of the heart, or to measure to any degree of accur acy his intellectual divergence from anv established course. How often do we learn to our regret that m the exercise of our franchise at the polls on election day, that we have but cast our pearls before the swine, so to speak, when, later, we see, those honored servants of the people, for whom they voted (in-telleigentlu?) (in-telleigentlu?) complacently serv- j in g under the iron will of mono- j ply and greed? Democracy is on trial for its life, the victim of political pettifoggery; pet-tifoggery; yur Government U passing through the most critical criti-cal period in the history of the Republic, and politics stands condemned con-demned as the cause of this grievous and agrivating condition. Granting this to be true, it be- comes the sacred duty of the American people to see that Democracy Dem-ocracy is removed as far as possible pos-sible from politics. And what 1 mtaii oy his is that Democracy should be first in the hearts of the people, and held paramount to politics; that politics should be made the servant ser-vant to, rather than the master of Democracy; that if we may hope to preserve the integrity of the Nation, politics must be purged of its corrupt tendencies, and economic equality and social so-cial justice made the standards of Government ethics. One we:k from today a new set of officers will be elected, good men and women, no doubt, ! but what assurance have we that they will serve the best interest ! for the people? None, absolutely I none, for the very simple reason that they, regardless of their hon-i hon-i est intentions, will immediately ' become the property of those ' demi-gods of monopoly and the meek and lowly servants to the predominance of political parasites. para-sites. There are at least two parties who are always disappointed after af-ter election the candidates who are defeated and the people who vote for the winners. Let us cease to contend one with another, ano-ther, lay aside our prejudice, consider well the best interest of the people, regardless of party lines, and make the election in Washington County as satisfactory satisfac-tory to all as possible. Yours for better Government, Sylvester Earl. |
