Show R1IKMNG SPRINGS OF GREEN ALGAE (By Benj. Swapp) Many of our springs and streams in this vicinity contain plant life called green algae, or water moss. This moss is a menace to springs, reservoirs, water tanks, or in fact any place where water is allowed to stand for any length of time The following is a remedy which was discovered quite ac-cidently ac-cidently by the New London Isaak Waltons: The sportsmen of that city maintained a trout rearing pond fed by a spring, in which the green agae always grew freely. They had a habit of throwing their empty 22 rifle shells into the pond after each target practice prac-tice and soon found that the green algae always grew freely. The amount of copper in the water, due to the slow corrosion corro-sion of the empty cartridge shells lasts indefinitely and does not harm fish and larger plant life in the pool. |
