Show STATE AUTO TOUK BUREAU UKGKI 15Y PROVO CHAMIiER The need of a state road touring bureau for the purpose of giving tourists highway Information, was urged before the house highways and bridges committee Thursday by E. S. Hinckley, secretary of the Provo chamber of commerce. Mr. Hinckley for the past few years has been deeply interested in the tourist traffic and in routing this traffic through the southern part of the state to the scenic wonders of Utah. In his talk before the committee he condemned the methods of the Utah State Automobile association in attempting as he alleged to route tourists to California over the Victory highway. He illustrated his point by explaining explain-ing that last summer he visited the touring bureau of the association to determine the truth of the statements that undue influence was being used by the bureau to route tourists over this- highway. To his surprise, he declared, he found such to be the case, the bureau attendant not only -highly commended the Victory highway, but went so far as to say that the scenery of the Sierra-Nevada mountains was equal if not superior to the scenery, of southern Utah, he said. Mr. Hinckly also pointed out the evil of the auto association using its influ-and influ-and garages in the state, ence to send tourists to certain hotels State Road Commissioner W. J. Parker said the road commission had not discussed the matter and suggested suggest-ed that the legislature go slowly in enacting a statute of this kind, as he was not sure that it would not be unconstitutional. un-constitutional. Replying to this Mr. Hinckley said the matter had been gone into very thoroughly . by competent attorneys and that nothing had been found to prevent the enactment of such a measure. He said the aim was not to establish a state controlled automobile auto-mobile association, hut a state controlled con-trolled information bureau, from which tourists would receive information infor-mation which would be to the best interests of the state. Commissioner Commission-er Parker said he thought this could be accomplished,, if it was not the thought to establish a state conrolled automobile association. Deseret News. |
