Show WALLACE FOR GERMANY I Washington, April 16. Light on the Administration's views on the protection of American industry in-dustry by any tariff may be found in this transcript from a Ways and Means Committee hearing: Secretary Wallace: "I can conceive con-ceive of a situation where Germany, Ger-many, for instance might be willing will-ing to lower the tariff on lard in case, we will say, she could move some toys into the United State. Mr. Reed, of New York: "Would you favor lowering the tariffs On things Germany produces pro-duces and ships to this country and which we produce here in our own country?" Secretary Wallace: "If Germany can produce them more efficiently than we can, it would be of benefit ben-efit to our consumers. Germany has a large number of small industries. in-dustries. They seem to be more efficient than our own. They are willing to sell at lower prices." |
