Show MG ARTHUR AND EMMETT WIN IN PENTHALON MEET "One of the most successful Penthalon Meets ever held at Dixie," is the verdict of coaches and spectators who saw this fine Held day at Dixie on Saturday last. With, ideal weather prevailing, prevail-ing, and more schools entered than ever before with a greater number of athletes participating, everything went off in fine shape. Lorraine McArthur, Junior Champion of 19 3 3, was successful success-ful in repeating his performance of last, year and won the Junior Championship with the amazing score of 4,217. Lorraine has had as his ambition through the year to repeat as Dixie and Inter-mountain Inter-mountain champion, and all comers com-ers should beware of this lad. His co-efficient this year is 2 68. His record in the various events are as follows: high jump, 4 feet 8 inches; shot put, 28 feet 1 inch; broad jump, 14 feet 6 inches; basketball throw. 28 feet; dash, 6.5. Lorraine was crowded by his pal, Dan Worthen, who finished third with the score of 3,699. McLloyd Sullivan of Hurricane High School finished second with a total score of 3,788 points. McLloyd lost last year by 11 points to Dan Worthen of Dixie. His revenge this year was rather thrilling as he won over his old rival by a total of 9 0 points. Other boys wno finished high in the Junior Division and deserve de-serve a lot of credit for their fine efforts this year are: David Pulsipher, Miesquit-e Junior High, 3.4S3; Terman Isom, Hurricane High, 3.471; Cloyd Tobler, Mes-quite Mes-quite Junior High, who finished second in the Inter-mountaun Meet last year, 3,313; Lynn Adams. Hurricane High School, 3,254; Orley Waite, Mesquite Junior High, 3,243; Max Bent-ley, Bent-ley, Dixie, 3.277; Howard Hinton, Hurricane High (School, 3.273; Jay Huntsman, Mesquite Junior High, 3,218; Clark Emmett, Dixie, 3.063; Billy Love, Dixie. 3,011; Leslie Ashby, Dixie, 3,009; Warren Church. Hurricane,' 2,-903; 2,-903; Leon Hall, Hurricane High School, 2,870. In the Senior Division. Leonard Leon-ard Emmett. who won the championship, cham-pionship, deserves outstanding credit for his efforts this year. More adverse conditions could not be encountered than with this lad, and it is through fine training train-ing and a determination un-met in many years that this boy succeeded in winning the Senior Championship. His brother Clark Emmett, who batches with him here in St. George is also deserving deserv-ing a lot of recognition for his fine efforts this year. These two boys spend many months of the winter cooking for themselves. them-selves. As a result of their training train-ing in self-preservation, etc.. we should credit them with some of the fine qualities that make for good men. Clark, a mere child finshed in the Junior Division with a score of 3.063. Dixie school director this year, deserves a lot of recognition for his efforts to succeed with ' these boys. Reed not only was ! school director but also handles han-dles these boys in Dixie Junior physical education work. Over seventy boys competed in the Meet. The squad system was used, and everybody connected with the Meet decided it was by far the best ever held here. Next year's Meet should be a real affair, and St. George is proud of the fact that they have been selected to sponsor this each year. Special credit should be given to the following boys who worked work-ed diligently to put over the Meet: Reed Wilson, school director, dir-ector, Howard Benson, Lewis Pec-tol, Pec-tol, Melvin Schmutz, Val Mc-Arthur, Mc-Arthur, Loraine Ivins, Elmer Graff, Rulon Pectol, Erlin Tobler and William Love. The meet started promptly at two o'clock. Everything was over and awards presented by five-thirty five-thirty p.m. Many of the fathers and mothers of the boys participating parti-cipating were present. The finest kind o: sportsmanship was shown, and the boys all left with a determination de-termination that they would spend the entire, year practicing for it next year'. A number of the boys were outstanding, and some fine perormances resulted. - Hurricane brought the greatest great-est number of boys to the Meet. Coach Elmer Graff brought down twenty boys, and Coach Graff has put forth a lot of effort this year. Lorraine Ivins of Overton High School should be commended for his efforts. in behalf of the Meet, and special credit should be given giv-en to Coach Reed Witwer of Orderville High School and Tobler Tob-ler of Mesquite Junior High. Hans Chamberlin, a businessman business-man of Orderville. Utah, although his boy did not compete this year, was on hand to assist in every way possible. Val McArthur, father of the champions, shifted a legal obligation to put in the entire afternoon and was a valuable val-uable help, not only in running off the Meet, but in deciding on individual scores. Bob Worthen, father of Dan Worthen, was over-enthused over-enthused and gave some valuable valu-able help. |
