L!(i to teach the children about safety. Helping with the safety day were Sheriff Arden Stewart and I Vputy Carlos Keed from the Sheriffs Department. Dennis Paulson and Dehnar Fane from the fn e department and Kilcen l''awcett, renistei ed nurse, from Hie medical field. The children were divided up into groups according to their primary class which is determined by their age. Kach group took a turn visiting each of the guests speakers to learn about safely in their particular field. Sheriff Stewart and Deputy Heed talked talk-ed to the children about street and traffic traf-fic safety for children. They also talked to them about child abduction. Kach of children were given H handout on describing a susxvt and how to describe a vehicle. This was given to them to help acquaint the children with knowing what the Hilice need to know. This enables the children to be of help to the police. The children were also taken out to the patrol cars to learn about the flashing lights and sirens. They were taught what they should do when they hear a siren and see the flashing lights. Sheriff Stewart said they gave them general safety tips to keep them from getting hurl. Kileen Kawcelt, UN. covered various things with the different age groups. She said with the two youngest groups she covered basic home health and safety. The older children went over those things, but expanded on other health tips. The children learned how to help in their homes, with accidents, and with sickness. The younger children were also taught how to put on a bandage Mrs. Kawcett talked to the children about not taking medicines unless they were sick and instructed to do so. She also talked about not playing with cleaning clean-ing fluids and gave a personal experience of when she was a young girl and drank some. The children learned what to do with cuts, what to do about bleeding, hums, unconsciousness, broken hones, and what to do if someone had taken a bunch of pills. Mrs. Kawcett stressed knowing emergency numbers. In the older group of children, Mrs. Kawcett also talked to them about what to do for someone who is choking. She showed them what to do and demonstrated on one of the children. I lide-and go-seek is a popular game among children. Mrs. Kawcett talked to the children about the dangers of hiding in such appliances as a washer, dryer, or refrigerator or anything that they might get trapjK'd in and can't breathe. Talking with the fire department was the third area the children learned about safety from. "What we are trying to impress upon them is don't play with matches and if there is a fire in the house, get out! " said Dehnar Ime. Mr. Lane stressed again and again to the children to get out if there is a fire. He said other things can be replaced whereas a life cannot. Mr. Iine said they are going to undertake under-take the project of making sure there are all of the emergency numbers in every home. He feels this is a very important step in safety. After listening to Mr. Lane, the children were taken out to see the fire truck Dennis Paulson showed the children how the fire truck operates. They tell the children to get out of the house if there is a fire. Dennis showed them the masks the firemen wear enabling enabl-ing them to go into the house. The children were also shown how they get the water to come out of the hose.
