Union crew places The Union Cougars pocketed their first state championship since 1965 when they edged the Wasatch Wasps, 102 to 9B'a', in the 2-A State Tournament in U-hi, Saturday. Union placed first in fixithall in 1965 and won the basketball crown in 1953. The Cougars won the state cross country meet in 1970 and 1971, but it wasn't officially recognized as a high school sport until a few years later. Wasatch was ahead 94'i to 93' -i going into the championship finals, but needed victories by both its wrestlers plus losses by Union matmen. However, Union put a dent in Wasatch's Wasat-ch's plans as they won two championship cham-pionship crowns and nabbed first place in the meet. Union's Shawn Cuch won the 98 pound title when he thumped Johason Yazzie of San Juan, 10-1. Farrel McCook of Union won the 112 pound crown when he toppled Freddie Tsosie of San Juan, 12-7. 12-7. Bardett Fausett placed second at 105 pounds when he was downed by defending state champion, Jimmy Manheimer of San Juan. Fausett defeated Manheimer the week before for the region title. Shawn Harris, Delta, downed Kevin Broadhead, Juab, 7-4, for the 119 pound title and Chris Wilkinson, 126, pocketed top honors when he pinned Brady Ripple of Wasatch in the first period. Brian Young of Wasatch nabbed first place at 132 pounds when he decisioned Doug Larson, Manti, 7-1. Kerry Prince, Hurricane, 138, placed first when he downed Rob Manis, Delta, 4-0. Brent Holdway, Hurricane, defeated Dave Garrett, Juab, 9 5, for the 145 pound title and Kyle Wilson, Morgan, 155, downed Donnie Wells, Grand. 13-5, for first place. Dennis Wells, Grand, 167, downed Spencer Snow, Emery, 5-2, for top honors and Kelly Hoyt, Hurricane, placed first at 185 pounds due to a 4 2 win over Russ Day of Juab. Jody Pikyavit, Millard, heavyweight, placed first when he pinned Lehi's Dave White in the second round. Four Union Cougars captured consolation con-solation honors. Jeff Samuels, Union, placed third due to a 4-1 win over Wayne Christensen of Richfield and Brent Cundall, Union, 132, netted third due to a 6-0 win over Ferd Allred, Emery. Dave Nielsen, Union, lis, placed fourth when he was thumped by Todd Pettus, Hurricane, 184 and Gar Powell, heavyweight, nabljed fourth place when he was pinned by Thayne Hardy of Delta in the third round. Delta, the defending state champions, cham-pions, placed third at 88 points and Hurricane captured fourth place at 87 counters. Juab nabbed fifth place at 68' 2 counters and Morgan captured sixth place at 54 1 '2 points. |
