However, Duchesne foiled the predictor as they downed Wendover by 17 points, 77 to 60, in a first round game, March 10. Duchesne had a 22-17 lead after one quarter and a 45-37 advantage at the end of the second quarter. The Eagles had a 59-51 advantage after three quarters and won the game by the score of 77-60. Trent Grant led the Eagles with 30 points and Bailey put in 20 counters. Davis scored 13 points. The KSL-TV sports department made Duchesne fans happy when they reported that Duchesne had upset Valley, 82-61, but the Uintah Basin fans became sad when they read in the daily newspaper the next day that Duchesne w as aownea Dy vauey, tu-oi. n appears that KSL-TV hasn't learned from its Union-Wasatch one point mixup when they reported that Wasatch downed Union by one point and then said that Union won by one point, but the winner turned out to be Wasatch by one point. Duchesne played three good quarters in the game with Valley as they were behind 16-12 in the first quarter, 35-32, second quarter and 56-49, third quarter. Valley outscored the Eagles, 22 to 12 in the fourth quarter. Grant led the Eagles with 25 points and Bailey scored 22 counters. The Eagles were knocked out of the tournament, Friday when they were edged by Beaver, 79 to 78. Duchesne had a 22-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and was ahead, 41-39, after two quarters. Beaver grabbed a 58-53 lead in the third quarter and won the game by the score of 79-78. Grant poured in 33 points for Duchesne and Kirk Bailey scored 16 counters. Dugway, a team wtih two 5'10" forwards and 5'8" and 5'7" guards edged the defending state champions. Valley, 38 to 36, in the 1-A championship game on a 15 foot jump shot by John Witkowski with one second left in the game. 5'8" Bruce held Valley's 6'5" Wayne Jones, the tournament's leading scorer, to 16 points. Witkowski was the leading scorer for Dugway at 17 points. Dugway had leads of 7-4, first qurater; 19-16, second quarter; 31-28, third quarter and 38-36. fourth quarter. Grant turned in an amazing per-formance per-formance in the state tournament. He competed in only three games, but finished as the number two scorer in the 1-A tournament at 88 points. The leading scorer. Jones, scored 92 points in four games and edged Grant by four points. Grant scored 30 points the first day, 25 points the second and 33 points the third day. |
