West's Frost pinned Carter in the third round Uinvah Basin all-shears vo bavile wresvlers in Denver, Colo, meev The wrestling season is over for many tusslers in the Uintah Basin, but for a number of junior high grapplers 1 from Vernal, Roosevelt and West, the action on the mat is still taking place as all-star junior high tusslers from the Uintah Basin will battle teams from Denver, New Mexico and Oklahoma in dual meet action March 24, 25 and 26. All-stars from the Uintah Basin will battle a Denver All-Star team at Loveland High School Wednesday March 24 at 7:30 p.m. and will take on another all-star team from Denver, plus teams from Oklahoma and New Mexico March 25 and 26. The wrestling action March 25 and 26 will begin at 6 p.m. at Northglen High School. A team from Texas might also compete in the meet. The Uintah Basin's 70 pounder will be Vernal Junior High tussler Shelton Humphries. Humphries posted a 9-3 mark during the past school year. Ver-nal's Ver-nal's Humphries had four dual meet pins and placed first in the Basin Tournament Tour-nament and second in the Castle Rock Tournament. Humphries placed third in the Vernal Tournament. "Humphries is coming along real well. He will be all right," said Vernal Junior High and Uintah Basin junior high all-star team coach, Leon Smuin. Brett Nielson of West Junior High will be the 75 pounder on the Uintah Basin all-star team. Nielson posted a 16-3 record this season at West. "Nielson is an eighth grader and he is going to be pretty strong," remarked Smuin. The 80 pounder on the squad is West Junior High's Craig Phillips. Phillips posted an 11-0 record. "Phillips goes for the pin. He is a deceiving little wrestler," stated Smuin. The 85 pound position on the team was still undecided as of Thursday and battling for the spot on the team are Gene Carter, Roosevelt, 10-2; Richard Horrocks, Vernal, 15-12 and Darrin Brandt of West. Shane Frost of West will be the 90 pounder on the Uintah Basin team. Frost nabbed an undefeated record of 15-0 at West Junior High. "Frost has a lot of leverage and is a good wrestler," said Smuin. The Uintah Basin 95 pounder is Ryan Siddoway of Vernal Junior High who blazed the mats with an 18 1 record. Siddoway nabbed two pins in dual meets and captured first places at the Castle Rock, Vernal and Basin Tournaments. Tour-naments. Siddoway posted a 7-0 mark in the three meets. "Newell is a wrestler who an opponent thinks he has beaten, but can come back and win the match," stated Smuin. Vernal's Devin Bailey will wrestle at 12(1 pounds. Bailey finished the season with a 10-2 mark and placed second in the Vernal Tournament. Bailey placed third in the Basin Tournament. Bailey's only two losses of the season have been to Vernal's George Cook. Bailey had six pins in dual meets. "Bailey is a solid fundamental wrestler, who can't be counted out in any match," commented Smuin. George Cook, 125, Vernal Junior High, posted the most w ins of anyone on the team at 20 wins and 1 loss Cook placed first in the Castle Rock, Vernal and Basin Tournaments. He placed third at the Meeker Tournament. Cook nabbed a 10-1 mark in tournaments. "Cook suffered his only loss in the Meeker JV Tournament. A tussler from Fruita High School beat him. Cook has done an exceptionally fine job for Vernal Ver-nal this year." said Smuin. "He nabbed ten pins in 21 matches. The 130 pounder on the team is Robert Merrill. Vernal. Merrill netted a 15 2 mark during the past season. Merrill Mer-rill had four dual meet pins and placed first in the Vernal and Basin Tournaments Tour-naments and third in the Castle Rock and Meeker Tournaments. "Merrill is probably one of the quickest wrestlers on the squad." commented Smuin. "Merrill is really an improved wrestler from last year." Another Vernal wrestler w ith one loss on the Uintah Basin team is 135 pounder Gary Murray at 19-1. Murray placed first in the Castle Rock, Vernal and Basin Tournaments. Vernal Junior High's Larry Huber will be at 140 pounds and Rick Porter. Vernal, will be at 145 pounds. Huber netted six dual meet pins and placed first at the Vernal and Basin Tournaments. Tour-naments. He placed first at the Meeker Tournament and fourth at the Castle Rock Tournament. "Huber is probably one of our most underrated wrestlers. He is a steady diehard wrestler, who gives you 100 percent all the time," said Smuin. Huber posted a 19-3 mark. Porter captured first in the Basin Tournament and third in the Vernal Tournament. He nabbed two pins in dual meets. "Porter is a first year wrestler who has really come a long ways this year and he w ill make a fine wrestler in the future." stated Smuin. Porter had a 10-7 mark. The 155 pounder on the team w ill be Roosevelt's Lloyd Bingham. Bingham posted a 13 1 mark. "Bingham is probably pro-bably the most outstanding wrestler this year on the Roosevelt Junior High team." remarked Smuin. Derek Cross. Vernal, is the 175 pounder on the Uintah Basin team. Cross netted a mark of 12-4 and placed first in Uie Castle Rock, Vernal and Basin Tournaments. Cross nabbed six dual meet pins. "Cross is another first year wrestler," said Smuin.
