Conditions are perfect now until cold weather hits. Uinfca sfreeoeras care jus? righf for Fall tfly vishing By Hartt Wixom Vmial Express Outdoors Writer Vemal area residents have some Vantages in the fall fishing depart-:r.t depart-:r.t Most streams out of the Uinta (fountain slope are in perfect condition p m for spin or fly fishing. Bui, perhaps best of all, there are so :.jnyof them. One of my favorites is ie Uinta River. While basically a y.svt trout stream, some whopper iwns have been produced by the ler. Whether on the Ute reservation, nell into the Ashley Forest within the iriyon, there is always the chance of in wrsized brownie. Some of my best fishing has been diking upstream from the U-Bar ?je. Cutthroats to 14 inches, with a sr smaller brook trout, have liked f eral fly patterns. Among them are i female Adams, black barberpole, tier quill, mostly in sizes 12-14. Some :ts are brushy, but if wading the am itself you can get to the fish. Generally I prefer to cast upstream avoid roiling water (and don't let ircne tell you this doesn't put fish torn, but the Uinta is so rocky it can fished either direction. Very little Moration is caused by wading and 5ng down. However, if you are a P fisherman, you'll do better by 'M upstream. It is easier that way '"trk a spinner, for example, the way 11 'told be fished: casting up and 'Bering down. Tctirist or visiting anglers often miss M'mtah, since there is nothing left at Wighway crossing east of Roosevelt. you can get to it readily as well as mailer Whiterocks River by taking lon of Whiterocks exit north of 5 Check the maps carefully, for if ' w reservation you'll need to buy a W at nearby Ft. Duchesne Fish w Came headquarters, or a local sporting goods store. At this time of year you can also enjoy golden-tinged aspens. Uinta Canyon, along with the never -changing conifers, has plenty of them. The kids, if wild trout are too challenging for them, might even pick up some leftover planter rainbows near the several picnic grounds. The Uinta canyon has some scenic ones. It is only a short hop, too, for the kids to try their luck on Smokey Springs at the U-Bar. Some groceries and basic supplies are available for the family. As for the hiking fisherman, skip those Uinta River stretches which has been "washed out" with spring floods, usually the straighter areas without logs or brush in or along the water. These serve as hideaway lairs for larger trout, although smaller ones will sometimes strike from open water. It is always possible to see wildlife throughout the entire canyon, including deer and beaver. Elk are not likely, but possible, on the upper slopes, especially later in the fall. Moose have been known to frequent the region, as on Rock Creek between the two Stillwater sectors. There are far more moose, however, on the north slope. The Uinta is a slippery, mossy challenge, one you can best prepare for by gluing felt soles to your boots. Water is swift, and a wading pole can be helpful. If losing your balance slightly, I've found you can stabilize in marginal situations by dipping your rod tip under surface. Excellent fly fishing can be expected through the fall into cold water temperatures tem-peratures "kill" hunger about late ' October, depending on weather. Right now it activates the feeding urge, with many insects killed by cold nights drifing downstream inviting trout in- terest. But, if the "dead drift" method doesn't work, don't hesitate to try skipping your offering upstream. Sometimes you have to get their attention. |
