Show Ute volleyball crew wins two encounters The Uintah Ute volleyball team improved its first place record in Region 7 to seven wins and one loss with victories over the Judge Memorial Bulldogs and the Jordan Beetdiggers last week. Uintah is tied with Cyprus for first place in Region 7. The Utes have an overall record of 12 wins and 2 losses in varsity encounters. Uir.tah toppled Judge Memorial Oct. 25, in two games, 15 to 10 and 15 to 10. Scoring points for Uintah in the first contest were: Jodene Merkley, 4; Chris Mott, 3; Teresa Smith, 2; Margie Daky, 2, Kristy Taylor, 1; Darian Abegdtfn, 1 and Eileen Moweils, 1. Pennie Murray and Chantae Julius scored one point each. "Our girls want to be the first place term in Region 7 and they are working hard to achieve that goal. The games with Judge Memorial and Jordan were won due to excellent teamwork. We are playing well as a team and that is the key," stated Uintah volleyball coach, LoaKay Bowthorpe. Uintah will battle Tooele on the road, Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., and will compete in the 3-A State Volleyball Tournament at Olympus High School, Nov. 10-13. The first place team from Region 7 will compete in a first round game, Monday at 6:30 p.m. and the second place team will encounter an opponent at 8:15 p.m., Monday. The Uintah junior varsity team also picked up two triumphs, last week. Uintah downed Judge Memorial, 15 to 10 and 15 to 6. Margie Merrell was the high server in the first game for Uintah with eight points. McCurdy scored four points and Murray had two points. Lynnette Merrell scored one point. Johnna Wiseman was the high scorer in the second game with six points and McCurdy had five points. Jannette Wiseman scored four points. Uintah defeated Jordan, 15 to 7 in the first game and 18 to 16 in the second game. Maelynn Gray and Lynnette Merrell were the high scorers with four points. Murray scored two points and Julius, Margie Merrell, Julene Johnson and Janet Slaugh added one point. Johnna Wiseman, Lynnette Merrell and McCurdy were the number one servers for Uintah in the second game with four points each. Margie Merrell scored three points and Gary, Murray, Julius added one point. "The Utes were behind 6 to 1 in the second game, but they came from behind to win the contest. Jordan lost its momentum after Uintah started hitting the ball," said Bowthorpe. |
