Dr. Decora also participated in the 2nd Oil Shale and Tar Sands Panel of the United Nations Conference on New and Renewable Sources of Energy held in Geneva, Switzerland, Oct. 20-24 The panel began its work as a result of a resolution of the General Assembly of the UN who commissioned several other panels as well. The General Assembly wants a report from the various panels to be presented to their body in Nairobi in August of 1981. Decora, an international authority on oil shale, was nominated by the U.S Government and selected by a UN Secretary-General to be an expert member of the first panel, which met at the United Nations in New York City last January. He was elected chairman of the panel, which is comprised of experts from France, Morocco, Canada, Brazil, the People's Republic of China, the Soviet Union, Iran, Egypt, and the United States. These international activities of LETC are an added dimension to its role as lead center for the in situ development of the nation's oil shale and non-oil shale processes. LETC has been an important part of the Laramie scene since 1924 when two researchers established a Petroleum Field Office as part of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of Interior. Dr. Decora, a native of Rock Springs, Wyo., has been Director of the Center since 1975, directing a work force of 185 employees and managing a current budget exceeding 50 million dollars. z : h r-rn i it I 1 . 1 I 7 1 i f 5 J m ' V' i ) .
