Show 'Wearing religion on the sleeve' Dear Editor: There seems to be some confusion in the meaning of the ancient adage or proverb "Wearing religion on the sleeve.''' It has nothing to do with bonafide, or orthodox religion, but merely a term applied to people in early times describing people falsely using religion for purposes contrary, or adverse to the religious doctrines of Christianity. I have heard it used all my life, and thought all informed people were aware of the meaning. It may originated after Jesus Christ kicked the people out of the temple for desecrating it. This has been stated in the New Testament, describing his anger because of it. People who read and travel extensively ex-tensively come on to very weird examples depicting the abuse which is heaped on the word "religion." Anybody who reads should know about some of the things, for instance the cult, I believe is called "The Peoples Temple" and the Jim Jones nightmare. There are hundreds similar to this, too numerous to mention. Sincerely vours. J. A. MCKNIGHT |
