Show r 1 j Castle Valley Comments... j Homestead Hints Saturday night we registered register-ed at 0 degrees here in Castle Valley, our once solar heated bath tub (the little blue plastic pool) turned overnight into a skating pond. As we hurried about making last minute preparations for the cold ahead, I dug out my box of seeds. Not the kind of seeds for the garden. These seeds are for sprouting. When there are no fresh salad vegetables left in my garden, I turn to my sprouting seeds for salads, sandwiches, and snacking. Sprouting seeds is really fun and easy. I remember a few years ago when I first started sprouting seeds. I used alfalfa sprouts in place of lettuce on my girls' school lunch sandwiches. At lunch that day they were surrounded by children who thought they were eating "little worms." Of course the girls enjoyed the ruckus about them. And after a few samples had been given out, other children wanted to trade sandwiches with them. I Seeds, grains and nuts have I always been a valuable and i important source of food for man and animal. Under the right conditions of light, I , warmth and moisture, these seeds begin to swell and life that has been dormant begins to come out: In the process many changes take place. In preparation to feed the new plant the little seed unlocks, manufactures or in some mysterious way begins to multiply the nutrients within itself. Vitamins are greatly increased. Protein also increases in-creases and becomes available for use. This store house of nutrition that can feed a kernal of wheat, for instance, until it becomes a full grown plant; can be a valuable source of food for man and animal. To bring about this miracle simply SPROUT and EAT. Tune in again next week for more details. Today's Thought Just be glad you're not getting all the government you're paying for. Will Rogers, Jr. |
