Show Community Honors Howard Balsley On His 90th Birthday Tuesday ; Tuesday, December 7, has been declared Howard Balsley Day in Moab by Mayor W. D. McDougald, and Mr. Balsley, who will celebrate his 90th birthday that day, will be honored at two events. At the noon Chamber of Commerce meeting, a birthday celebration for Mr. Balsley has been planned. And between 4 and 6 p.m. a Happy Birthday Open House honoring him will be held in the Arches Dining Room, sponsored by the Arches Shrine Club. In proclaiming this special day, the mayor called upon the people of the Moab ca to join in the congratulations and , celebrations. He noted that Mr. Balsley ' first arrived in Moab on his birthday Dec. 7 in 1908. He also recounted the civic activities he has been involved in since that time. The proclamation states, "he lived in nearly abject poverty during his first three months in town, earning 50c a day shucking corn" and "he then resolved to better his situation, took a civil service examination and was thereafter employed employ-ed nine years with the United States Forest Service...." During this period he was once elected mayor by the people of Moab, but he had to decline this position, being a government employee. Mr. Balsley also served as Grand County Clerk for 13 years, and was a member of the Board of Education for 40 years. Rudy Higgins, general manager of the TexasGulf, Inc. Potash Plant, delivered check tor property taxes in the amount of $84,216.20 this week to County Treasurer Donna Loveridge. TexasGulf also paid some $52,000 In taxes to San Juan County. Checks from three other large taxpayers had arrived by the deadline Tuesday, according to Mrs. Loveridge. They were: Atlas Corp., $214,531.99; D&RG Railroad, $210,630.50; and Continental Telephone, $54,812.22. |
