Willful destruction of nearly 30 road signs took place' sometime during the night or early morning hours of Nov. 29, mainly on north Highway 163. Jack Beeson, state road foreman, said he feels the signs were knocked over by a pickup backing into them. Cost for replacement will run at least $500, including man hours, posts, some new signs, and mileage. Repairs for vandalism such as this have used up one-third of the state roads maintenance budget this year. Police Chief Mel Dalton urges all citizens to report any suspicious actions observed. Mutual cooperation can help prevent this kind of crime, he said, noting that it's hard to believe no one saw the destruction of this many signs taking place. '.. |
