Show Grading System Analyzed At Grand High School By Deborah Hanna As report cards slip by us, students at GCHS at one time or another, wonder why they got a certain grade. So I decided to look into the grading system of Grand County High, interviewing both teachers and students on the subject. The teachers at Grand County High have the choice of how they want to grade, so that each teacher has his or her own system of grading. The possible ways to grade have been broken down to five: the point system, the percent system, the curve system, the pass or fail system, and the achievement system. How do these work? The Point System The point system is much like the percent system but not as strict. The teacher sets a certain amount of points for an "A", a certain amount for "B", and so on down to an "F". The Percent System The teacher divides the number of points possible into " the points you received and 90 and higher is and "A", and 80 to 89 is a "B" and so on down to an "F". The Curve System Here the teacher either takes the percentage or the number of points scored and sets them highest to lowest. The first and last 7 are As and Fs. Then the next 25 and the second to the last 25 are Bs and Ds and the middle percentages are Cs. The Pass or Fall System In cadet teaching or office aides no work is handed in. The student can either pass or fail by being there and working or not being there and 1 not working. The Achievement System In speech or remedial classes the students are graded in how well they have progressed and learned each step in class. It is necessary for the teachers to grade differently because a P.E. teacher cannot grade the same as an English teacher or a remedial teacher grade the same as an advanced class teacher. How do the students at GCHS feel about the grading system? In my observations I have found the above average students are pleased with the grading system, the below average students dislike the grading system, and the average students don't really have anything for or against it. After my interviews with . teachers who used one of the five systems, I feel that the grading system at Grand County High is just fine. |
