Show New school attendance I rules place responsibility ! on parents, district says Parents take note! A recent I policy change in the Grand County School District now makes student attendance the I responsibility of parents. It is j hoped that the changes will I encourage students to attend class on their own behalf, and J that discipline measures will e be handled by the parents. Under the new system there will be no excused or unexcused absences. Any stu dent in secondary (6-12) who is absent from a class fifteen or more times during any quarter will lose credit in that class. Middle school students failing an excessive number of core subjects will be considered consider-ed candidates for retention for the next school year. Loss of credit for high school students will interfere with normal progress toward high school completion and graduation. Three tardies shall be consid- ered equivalent to one absence. ab-sence. In elementary grades (K-5) all excessive absences and tardiness shall be reported to the office of the principal. The principal will investigate all cases of unacceptable attendance atten-dance and determine the appropriate ap-propriate action to be taken on an individual basis. - Parents will receive either oral or written notices of each case of truancy. If a student establishes an unacceptable attendance pattern and no improvement has been accomplished ac-complished after a reasonable time, the principal may refer the student to the proper juvenile authorities. Students returning to school after an absence will be required to file a written explanation signed by the parents or guardian, which will be filed in the student's records. They will then receive re-ceive an admittance slip. With the realization that some absences are necessary, attendance committees will be organized to hear requests for waiver of credit loss or attendance atten-dance requirements. The committees, com-mittees, one in each secondary second-ary school, will consist of two faculty members, the principal princi-pal or his assistant who will serve as chairman, and two students who are elected members of the student council. coun-cil.
