Show I School budget OK'd after hearing ''t With only two people in attendance a J public hearing called to review the ;! tentative 1977-78 school budget, the I Grand County Board of Education adop- ' ted the spending document which details j! planned expenditures of $2.7 million over the next 12 months. !; Almost all categories of the budget ' show increases over the current year. In ' Maintenance and Operation, the largest I single increase came in the instructional ! ' budget where figures take into consider-t consider-t ation the nearly 12 per cent increase in teacher salaries granted for the coming contract year. The 12 per cent figure J includes a 7 per cent across the board jump, along with longevity increment 'I increases and increases in medical ' insurance premiums for staff personnel. A total of $249,449 was budgeted in capital outlay - an increase from the J '. $156,513 spent during the current year. ', Superintendent Bill B. Meador report- J ed that it is anticipated that the mill levy required to support the new budget will j! be 41.39 mills, as opposed to 41.29 mills for the current year. The additional .10 of a mill will be levied in August, not J necessarily to raise additoinal money, but to meet state requirements that 28 '', mills be levied in all districts for maintenance and operation. Grand County was given three years to arrive at that point after the county was revalued several years ago, and this new increase will meet the state require- !j ment. A total of $154,609 will be carried over from this year's budget to begin the new , year. This figure is very close to J beginning balances shown for the cur- rent year. The budget also anticipates receiving ! ; $25,000 from the federal government as J Grand County's entitlement under Pub- ', lie law 874, which provides federal aid to school districts providing education to lj children of people working for the ' federal government, or working on federal land. The law has been passed by . J Congress, and if funded entirely could bring in well over $100,000, Mr. Meador said. The $25,000 figure was used in the . budget because no appropriation has yet ' been approved by Congress, and the lower figure represents the lowes( ; entitlement the District could receive based on categories of the act actually ' funded. ' I In other action, the Board approved a new two-year contract with Superinten- ', dent Meador, beginning on July 1 of this ; I year. The Superintendent reported that J all school remodeling programs were on ' or ahead of schedule, and that he J anticipated that all work would be ', completed well in advance of the start of school in late August. Materials, such as carpet, are all on hand, and no waiting ', period will be required. |
