Show CUP funding approved by Senate panel The Appropriations Subcommittee Sub-committee of the Senate Public Pub-lic Works Committee voted last week to retain in the Public Works Appropriations Bill funding for the Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project. Senator Jake Garn said today that he is "obviously "obvious-ly happy" with the vote and that he thinks the action demonstrates that "we in Utah have done our homework home-work and have been able to communicate to the members of the Committee the validity of the Project." "While there were some tense moments following a close vote in the House on the water projects, my conversations conversa-tions with Subcommittee Chairman John Stennis (D-Miss;) (D-Miss;) led me to expect the Bonneville Unit would be approved," said Garn. "I think it is too bad that the Congress has not been allowed to work its will on all the projects and that some of them have been deleted, but perhaps the intense in-tense scrutiny the President has turned on them has been useful. Careful evaluation of projects is needed and worthy ones, such as the Central Utah Project, can withstand that scrutiny. 'The Subcommittee action in deleting some projects and reducing funding for others shows that the Senate is working toward a compromise or agreement with the President Presi-dent so that there will be no veto of the appropriations bill. It is now necessary for us to hold fast to this agreement and convince members of the House that a confrontation would harm everyone." Senator Garn said the Subcommittee Sub-committee vote is not without its negative points. "The compromise means that there will be now new starts of water units this year and that we will not be able to get the Uintah and Upalco units underway. This is most serious in the case of the Uintah Unit, which has been too long delayed. It is imperative impera-tive that this unit be brought on line as soon as possible to satisfy the needs and claims of the Ute Indian Tribe." |
