Show Small Group Attends ! Forest Hearing Monday About 25 people attended the public meeting Monday liight to dkseuss tentative management decisions on 17 inventoried roadless arca3 on the Manti LaSal National Forest. Two of the areas under un-der consideration are located locat-ed on the LaSal Mountains. In the ' tentative : decision on Man's' Peak, the Forest Service has stated that " it should be managed under the multiple use concept as 1 in the past because of irrever-sable irrever-sable and irretrievable,, commitments. com-mitments. Jt is not, Forest officials slated, considered suitable or desirable 'for wilderness wil-derness or special area ''classification ''clas-sification at this ' time..'1 Some portions may remain . essen. tially undeveloped. The tentative management decision on the Mt. Peate area is to 'classify it, as v a scenic area because ef the backdrop it provides . from desert viewing ' and 'because of the scenic view from the peak itself. Scenic areas are places of outstanding . or matchless beauty which require Bpecia! management ' to preserve these qualities. A specific management plan is ' prepared prepar-ed and incorporated into the National Forest and recreation recre-ation management plans designed de-signed to enhance and protect pro-tect the special values involved. in-volved. Approval , of such plans by the Regional Forester For-ester constitutes approval of the area classification, Forest For-est Service officials indicated. indicat-ed. The only area on the Forest For-est proposed as a candidate wilderness study for inclusion inclus-ion in the National Wilder- W0" ness Preservation System h the Dark Canyon-Woodcnshoe area of the Monticello Ranger Ran-ger District. This area,, on the extreme west flank of Elk Ridge, rates high in all elements for wilderness suitability, suit-ability, according to the Forest Service. It is particularly partic-ularly high in geologic, scenic scen-ic and archaeological values. Development opportunities for other resources are low, the report continues. Further consideration of these management decisions will be made upon input from oral and written statement-; submitted at the meeting, and from written slalemcnis which may be sent to the Forest Supervisor, 350 E.
