' -1 The thrill of fast moving rapids approaching a blazing sunset, with the music of roaring waters In the background, Is just part of the excitement experienced on river float trips. Wayne Gold, local manager for Western River Expeditions, has run many such trips through Westwater and Cataract Canyons, and Is understandably in love with his work. Manager of River Running firm Leads Exciting Life One might least expect ex-pect that a prerequisite for running river trips Is having the ability to wiggle wig-gle your ears while rolling rol-ling your eyes and rotating ro-tating your arms In opposite op-posite directions, all at the same time. So says Wayne Gold, manager for Western River Ri-ver Expeditions In Moab. Mo-ab. Who knows? A trip with Wayne down Cataract Cata-ract Canyon or through Westwater might be complete com-plete with other Paul Bun-yon Bun-yon type tales, possibly a serenade on his guitar, gui-tar, and If picnic tables tab-les were available, he could easily entertain with a standing broad jump over a table. Unbelievable? Not really, "'ayne's talents are spread around quite evenly to Include a hobby hob-by of volleyball, plus active ac-tive Interest in seasonal sports and activities such as hiking, jeeplng, fishing, fish-ing, hunting and camping. His single bound over a picnic table is a skill he still posesses from his track days In high school. He also played football and volleyball in school. Wayne and his wife , Linda, hav lived in Moab for about a year now. They both are originally from Bountiful, Ut. , where they met when he began running float trips In the summer while working In the Insurance business with his father in the winter. The Golds are 'newlyweds' of under 2 years, and haven't any children, as yet, he adds. When Western River Expeditions began their river trips through West-water West-water Canyon, Wayne was picked, along with a few others, to run the first trip in that area. With this experience he was then transferred to Moab as assistant manager of the local branch in May of 1974. This year he Is managing the Moab office, of-fice, and at the age of 25, seems to have a lot going for him. While still living in the Salt Lake area, wayne was active on the YMCA volleyball team which won the Denver Open, an Invitational In-vitational tournament held annually in Denver. He played In several oth-' oth-' er national Invitational tournaments which are usually scouted by Olympic Olym-pic coaches for the best players. Wayne has been coaching a local boys team which will be playing play-ing the Moab-hosted tour nament beginning here Friday afternoon. Besides attending college col-lege for 3 years at Weber We-ber State where he majored ma-jored in business and recreation, re-creation, Wayne served an LDS mission for 2 years among some 15 dif ferent Indian tribes in Arizona and New Mexico. Mex-ico. He is enjoying his work with Western thoroughly. At the present time Western's Wes-tern's warehouse Is located lo-cated on the River Sands road west of the hospital hospi-tal where tickets for trips can be purchased. Rlver trips from short 1-day excursions to long 10-day 10-day trips are easily arranged ar-ranged to suit anyone, and Wayne will personally personal-ly be running some of the float trips in this area when the season opens, although he will also have 8 or 9 boatmen employed as well. |
