Show money tveJ spent The special Interests of big money contributors have been subtly nudged Into the political process with continued intensity, undermining the function of democratic government. Watergate is a prime example ex-ample of the critical result. Too often politicians understandably become In debted to campaign contributors who desire certain benefits. A broadening of campaign support by a greater number of individual contributions is one method of avoiding this erosion of politics. Fortunately, For-tunately, this now may be accomplished by simply checking the appropriate box on national and state income tax forms designating that $1 of individual ; taxes be used for political purposes. It appears that very few Utahns, a mere 25 by early Indications, realize that the Legislature has enacted the same type of checkoff for State tax forms as appears on national forms. This checkoff provides for half of the contribution to go to the state organization and half to the county organization organiza-tion where the taxpayer resides. It doesn't increase the taxpayer's bill to the state, and monies are divided between parties based on previous election ratios. Individual taxpayers now have a greater responsibility re-sponsibility than ever before to Insure good government. gov-ernment. Lessening the pressuresof special Interest groups who have carried the biggest load of campaign cam-paign financing in the past will undoubtedly aid In reinstating re-instating democracy as was originally Intended by our forefathers. We therefore urge all those who haven't done so already to check this special box in an effort to provide a more equitable governmental body. |
