Green River suffered a rash of burglaries on Friday Fri-day evening when the Laundromat owned by George Weihing was broken bro-ken into, as well as the Stanley Hunt store, and t Larry Carter's service station. Night Watchman Harmond Weber and Deputy De-puty Sheriff Dwendle Wilcox Wil-cox are investigating, and have picked up some clear fingerprints from the broken window and in the new Politano store. Visitors. . . $ Mr. and Mrs. Phil Mc-J Mc-J Donough and son Phil of 1 Albuquerque have been visiting with Mrs. Mc-Donough's Mc-Donough's sister and family, fa-mily, the Harold Nations. Lisa, a sister of the two women, who makes her home with the Mc-Donoughs, Mc-Donoughs, was also a guest. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stephens of San Diego are visiting Floyd and Virginia Vir-ginia Stephens for a few days. They have taken some trips around the local lo-cal sites of interest, and are thoroughly enjoying their stay here. Attends Meeting. . . Mr. and Mrs. Ken Silli-man Silli-man drove to Salt Lake City on Monday, where Ken attended a meeting of the Federal Research Committee. This is a committee set up by the State Legislature Legisla-ture for the purpose of developing and directing industrial development throughout the state. One of the projects under study is the Missile Base, and it is hoped to maintain main-tain the Athena program here. There are ten members on the committee, with Governor Rampton as head of it, and Jack Dun-lop, Dun-lop, Executive Secretary. Has Eye Surgery. . . Otis "Dock" Marston entered St. Mary's Hospital Hos-pital in San Francisco for surgery on his left eye for cataract, this week. Dock will be 81 years old this year, and is well known in this area, having done research on the Colorado and Green Rivers extensively exten-sively for several years past. He compiled a biography bio-graphy of D. Julien, whose name is carved on the canyon walls in several places. Dock maintains that D. Julien met his fate in Cataract Canyon --the --the Indians expressed it, "Gone Beaver." Marston is also noted for his extensive boating experience on both the Green and Colorado, having hav-ing made power boat trips in the Grand in the 40's and 50's, with a Sportyak trip in 1964. He was in the first jet-boat up-river expedition on the Grand. Known for many years as the outstanding authority author-ity on history of the rivers, ri-vers, Marston served as technical advisor to the Disney Company, when they filmed "Ten Who Dared." He is now engaged en-gaged in writing his book on the river, which is being be-ing eagerly awaited by historians and scholars, as well as river runners. AMA SRA Motocross. . . About 225 riders turned out for the Points races on Sunday, with a good track after it dried out for an hour or so. Winning Win-ning rides were: 100 Novice: 1st to Billy Cash, 2nd to Danny Wood and Kelly Gassett took 3rd. These riders were all from the Salt Lake City area. 125 Novice: Kenny Meeker Mee-ker took 1st; Mitch Ve-tere Ve-tere of Green River placed pla-ced 2nd; Robert Minchey, 3rd; Eldon Copier, 4th; and Steven Cannell racked rack-ed up 5th. 200 Novice, found Randall Ran-dall Bradford in first place, and Rodney Mathews Ma-thews in second. 250 Novice awarded 4 prizes: 1st to David Headman, Head-man, 2nd to John Capier, 3rd to Bob Fox, and 4th to Richard Bowden. Open Novice brought out four trophy winners: 1st, Jesse Nation of Green River; 2nd, Lawrence Davis Da-vis from Helper; 3rd, Denny Sturman from Pro-vo Pro-vo and 4th James Smith. Amateur 100 and 125 were combined, with 1st taken by Shane Narans of Moab; 2nd, Terry Gwinn, Moab; 3rd, Kirk Guymon, Spokane; 4th, Bob Richons from Riverton; and Mit-cnell Mit-cnell Jones of West Jor dan taking a 5th. 200 Amateur found two winners: Kit Morgan of Goshen and Chuck Egan of West Jordan. 250 Amateur placed Kyle Davis of Helper in 1st; Denn Toth 2nd; Doug Raft 3rd; Kerry Charter, Bountiful, 4th; and Tom Balsley, Moab, 5th. Open Amateurs: Tim ! Loomis of Salt Lake City placed 1st; 2nd was John Dialogue from Sandy and ' 3rd placed went to Tim I Vetere of Green River. I 125 Expert placed Jim I East of Bountiful in 1st place, Dan Techlenberg in 2nd, Terry Borden in 3rd, and Gary Stack in 4th. I 250 Expert was Robert I Plumb's for 1st; Ken Archibald Ar-chibald for 2nd and Michael Mi-chael O'Drescild in 3rd. Open Expert found Ken I Archibald taking 1st; I Laddie King of Green Ri-I Ri-I ver in 2nd and Preston I Gerber of Lehi in 3rd. j 22 Minibike riders showed up for the race, I with Bret Myers of Kem- merer, Wyo. taking 1st; Tad Rasmussen, 2nd; 1 Scott Randall, 3rd; Kent ' Steven Knox, alsoof Kem-I Kem-I merer, taking 4th; Adam I Smith for 5th and 6th place I was taken by Kelly Archi- bald. Although there had been a rain the night before, the day was clear until almost the end of the races, ra-ces, and the weather cool. A fair crowd of spectators specta-tors showed, and the Posse Pos-se Pals did well on their Snack Bar. Three slight accidents were reported, one of them when Tim Gold-rick's Gold-rick's machine fell apart on a jump, but the event was one of the most successful suc-cessful that the Jeep Posse Pos-se has sponsored. The next race in Green River will be April 27th, but several of the racers from here will go this weekend to Lakeside, lit. for a crosscountry race. Beta Zeta. . . Beta Zeta members met at the home of Fran-kie Fran-kie Anderson on the 3rd of March for their March business meeting. The meeting was conducted by Mrs. Reida Sherrill, president. The group made plans for their concession con-cession stand which will be open at the Gun Club's annual Trophy Shoot some time in April. Hula Zeta will be hosting many of the Slate Officers at their Social on the 17th ofMar. They have decided to host them with a spaghetti dinner. din-ner. Some of the members will be attending a State Council Meeting in Moab on the 15th of March. Award Winner. . . Judith L. Bedier, of Green River, Utah, was given a quality step pay increase award. She is employed as secretary in the headquarters of the Utah Launch Complex, an element of White Sands Missile Range's National Range Operations directorate direct-orate located in Green River. Movie to be Presented. . . The GRHS Band Students Stud-ents will present the show "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams" on Monday, Mon-day, March 17, at 8 p.m. Mr. Evans stated that the promoters promised him "Grizzly Adams" is a highly superior show to "Birth of a Legend" which was shown here recently with some disappointment. disappoint-ment. "Grizzly Adams" has enjoyed a long engagement en-gagement in the Salt Lake area, and everyone is invited in-vited to come out and bring the family. Tickets are $5 for a family of more than five members; $1.50 foradults;and$1.00 for students. The Band Mothers will be selling refreshments during the movie, and all proceeds go to the Band Uniform Fund. Woman's Club. . . Hostesses May Wilson, Grace Peterson and Edna Ed-na Miller welcomed Woman's Wo-man's Club members to the March 6 meeting held at the Lee Howlandhome. Mrs. Florence Howland, President, conducted the meeting and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Mrs. Lucille Holloway offered of-fered the evening prayer. Roll Call, an Irish poem, brought response from 13 members and guest Mrs. Ruth Maughan. Mrs. Pearl Baker introduced in-troduced Mr. John Hoffman Hoff-man who is doing research re-search for his doctorate thesis from the University Univer-sity of Nevada on the Can-yonlands Can-yonlands area. Mr. Hoffman Hoff-man stated he is doing "primary research", that is, actual interviews and talks with many of the people who pioneered this area. He feels it is important im-portant to preserve the written and pictorial history his-tory of the vast Canyon-lands Canyon-lands area before it is lost forever. Mr. Hoffman has been eneaped in his task for several years, and there is still much to be done. The Green River Club will again conduct the annual an-nual Cancer fund drive with Mrs. Florence How-land How-land as Chairman and Mrs. Grace Peterson, May Wilson, Louise Sherrill Sher-rill and Helen Wilson assisting. as-sisting. The Eastern District Convention will be held on Saturday, April 26, in Moab. Mrs. Edna Miller announced that the Green River Club would enter Mrs. Grace Peterson as its candidate for Clubwoman Clubwo-man of the Year, and would honor her at the District Convention. Mrs. Peterson served as Club President, as treasurer for several years, on innumerable in-numerable committees and projects and is always al-ways a cheerful and willing will-ing worker. The GRHS Band Mothers Moth-ers met at the school on Thursday afternoon to discuss the progress of their drive to buy new Band Uniforms and toor-ganize toor-ganize future activities. The group has currently t collected $3200 of the needed $5000. On Monday, March 17, the uniform that has been on display in the window of the Clothes Clo-thes Closet will bo sent back to the company with Cnal instructions and a 13 down payment on the .total cost of the uniforms. Mrs. Arlene Weihing and Mrs. Hilda King, co-chairmen co-chairmen of the Canvassing Canvas-sing committee, report that several businesses and individuals expressed express-ed their intention of mailing mail-ing their contributions to the school. A meeting has been called of everyone In Green River to gather at the High School Multipurpose Multi-purpose room for a meeting meet-ing about the Medical Center. Scott Smith, Assistant Manager of Rural Health program will be here to speak, and movies taken lately at the Medical Center Cen-ter will be shown. Sue Ann Allen, Provo, Family Practitioner will also be present to talk about future plans of the Center. Mrs. Allen Is hoping to be stationed In Green River as a medical medi-cal practitioner to be available when neither of the doctors who man the Center are here. Dr. Jerry Peters of Moab comes up on Tuesday, and Dr. Keith Hooker of Provo spends Friday at the Center, but a medical medi-cal practitioner would be most welcome for sickness sick-ness and accident that come up between their visits. Mrs. Gladys May and Mrs. Berniece Hunt will continue In their duties, du-ties, as well as Mrs. Cllne In the Kelly Drug Department. James Banasky is president pre-sident of the Medical Center committee, which Is active in keeping the building and activities going. The Dental Clinic will soon be ready for occu-pany, occu-pany, and will be serviced ser-viced by Dr. Donald Dodge at least one day a week and possibly more. Dr. Dodge has been coming to town on Tuesday Tues-day and holding dental office of-fice hours In the two rooms at the Bank Building. Build-ing. CAFE REMODELS. . . Mr. and Mrs. Tony Spadafora are remodeling remodel-ing and renovating the Arbon Cafe. A new roof, new celling, paneling in the dining room, new booths and a new carpet will make It one of the most attractive eating places In the country. Opening Is set for this weekend. |
