Show ) Tough Losses Dropped Devils i From Tournament Contention ' The Moab Red Devils were eliminated in their first two Karnes at last week's State 2-A Championship Cham-pionship tournament, won bv Cedar City High School. The tournament 1 was held in the Marriot I Activity Center on the Brigham Young I'niver-i I'niver-i sity campus in Provo. The Devils, playing their first game of the tournament against a tough team from St. George, were never able to get things going in the i early pa rt of the game and j trailed the highly-touted Flyers throughout theen- tire game. Final score was 74-71. i The Devils did, how- over, take a slight lead with 2:16 left in the fourth and final period, but they were unable to stop the heroics of the Flyers big center, who scored six points in the final period on foul shots. The Devils started off slow and continued to play that way throughout the first half. The Devils scored only 16 points in the first period and 15 points in the second quarter quar-ter against the tough Flyer Fly-er defense. The Flyers outscored the Devils by seven points in the first period and added ad-ded another five points to that margin in the second sec-ond period as they controlled con-trolled the tempo of the game. Ho Johnson, the Devils' leading scorer in the game came up with 23 big pints, but was held to only six points in the first half. Donny Knowles hit for 15 points and Jeff Cathey dropped in 14 for the Devils. De-vils. Marlyn Wyatt hit for 12 points during the game w ith eight of those coming in the first half of the contest. con-test. Mike Adkison hit the nets for 8 points. The Flyers were led by Hurst with 33 points and Ciiibler with 16. Both teams were fairly close on field goals with the Devils netting 27 while the Flyers hit for 28. The Flyers added 18 points from the foul line out of 22 attempts while the Devils De-vils could only hit 17 out of 24 from the free throw ' area. In their second game, the Devils were just about the same. They didn't seem to be able to put things togethers until it was too late. Manti won the contest 47-49. Bo Johnson again led the Devils in scoring, but with only 12 points to his credit. Knowles hit for 9 points while Adkison and Wyatt each scored 8 points. Jeff Cathey hit for 4 points. The Devils again were only one short of their opponents in the field goal division, but fell behind in the foul shooting department. de-partment. The Devils hit for only seven foul shots in the game, and only two in the second half. Manti dropped in 13 free throw s. The Devils were again outscored in the second period 16-13 and were behind 31-23 at the half. In the second half, the Devils could only hit for 26 points while trying to gain ground on the Tern- plars. In winding up the season, sea-son, the Devils finished with a season record of 16 wins and four losses. |
