Show Cancer Drive Exceeds GogI; Nearly Quarfer-AliiSbn Raised The Utah Division of the American Cancer Society collected almost a quarter of a million dollars in it -5 1970 fund - raising Crusade Cru-sade a record performance perform-ance which exceeded the goal for the year by nearly near-ly $40,000. Results of the successful campaign were announced Thursday night by J. Hol-man Hol-man Waters, chairman of the board, during the division's divi-sion's annual meeting at the Alta Club in Salt' Lake City. New officers also ware named at the cancer meeting meet-ing with Dr. Charles R. Smart as president to succeed suc-ceed Dr. Merrill L. Wilson who headed the society for the past year. Dr. Adolph M. Nielsen, a Salt Lake surgeon, was chosen as president elect and will assume office in the fall of 1971. Other new officers include in-clude R. Keith Spencer, chairman of the board ; Marvin L. Pugh, chairman of the executive committee, commit-tee, and R. Warren Barm s as vice president. Continuing Continu-ing in office are Philip C. Pugsley, secretary and Richard A. Van Winkle, treasurer. In reporting on the 1970 fund - raising Crusade, Mr. Waters noted that the $210,000 goal for the drive was the highest in the history his-tory of the Utah cancel-campaign. cancel-campaign. Some 17,000 volunteers vol-unteers visited nearly every ev-ery 'home and business firm in the state to collect a total of $249,607. E. La-Mar La-Mar Buckner of Ogden was the 1970 State Crusade Cru-sade Chairman. Most of the 43 county, units in the state reached or exceeded their goal for the Crusade, including 'Salt Lake County which had contributions of $119,-000 $119,-000 the first time the. state's most populous area had topped the $100,005 mark. Ellis R. Ivory was the Salt Lake County Crusade Cru-sade leader. Many other county units went well over their goals. Cache County reached 135 per cent of its goal; South Davis, 129 per cent; Duchesne Du-chesne East, 139 per cent Duchesne West, 158 per cent; Millard West, 154 per cent; Morgan, 164 percent; per-cent; San Juan North, 133 per cent; Sanpete North, 154 per cent and Summit North, 134 per cent. In actual contributions. Cache County raised $1,500 more than last year: Carbon $900 more; Davis South, $2,300 more; Utah Central, $3,300 more and Washington, $1,000 more.
